[PHOTOS] Trenton, NJ
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Oct 19 08:45:09 2019 Some photo observations over the years at the Trenton, NJ station. On a cold January day, Amtrak E-60 #964 enters the Trenton station. (January 1979) Classic ex-PRR E44 #4601 leads a freight drag into Trenton. (January 1979) When Amtrak trains were pulled by GG-1's. (January 1979) They were awesome and imposing. ! SEPTA Silverliners showing SEPTA and PC logos. (January 1979) (May 1979) NRHS Fantrip I attended featuring MP-54's that toured various SEPTA branches. (April 29, 1979) If my memory serves me correctly, this was the inaugural run of the NJT Mutlilevel cars. (Dec. 11, 2006) When they were new and clean ! Thanks for viewing !!

I'm surprised two GG-1's were needed for that train. The Pennsy had no problem pulling a long string of heavyweights behind one GG-1. Maybe the second "motor" was deadheading?

Behind those engines is the cleaning up of a derailed Amtrak ballast train which clipped a few power poles in the process.

He described motormen (engineers) coming on duty being assigned units whose defects had not been cleared searching to see if a different engine had less critical problems.

Fall 1967 speeded up Afternoon Congressional allowed 100MPH Penn to 30th in under 90 mins. Stopped somewhere on a clocker as a late Patriot zoomed by. GG1s were genuinely AWESOME.

Before the Toasters came along (but after the E60s were restricted to 85 MPH) those leviathans ruled the NEC. They pulled everything from Silver trains to NJ Transit locals. It was worth your wait on Thanksgiving weekend to see what strangeness the G's were bringing with them everywhere north of DC! Fantastic photos, thanks for taking me back!

The MU (real) Metroliner debacle was sad. From the beginning, bad decisions. PRR wanted the drop equalizer trucks rather than Budd's Pioneer IIIs, split the electrical order (as did other purchasers) between GE and WH. The latter blew the breakers at the substations. In the first year (18 months late) Metroliner trains were Parlors and coach/cafe because the WH full coaches weren't ready for prime time. They were faster, and had telephones availble to all riders--previous railphone services on the Royal Blue, Senator, and Congressionals were only available to first class passengers. As the trains had functional PA, one could be paged to answer a phone call. Today, none of that matters, but at the time this was serious convenience. When tested on the straightaway S of New Brunswick, they redlind only 5MPH slower than the Acela on the same ROW.

They were impressive. As to new electrification or re-electrification under a greennew deal, that will require agitation from below because electric freight operation has been gone too long for most of the youngergreenies don't have a picture ofthe advantages. Worse yet, some of the NIMBYs on the SF Peninsula have tried to object to electrified Caltrain as increasing noise.
