3 for (3)

Posted by Spider-Pig on Tue Oct 8 23:30:41 2019

Back when the overnight (3) ran as a shuttle between 135 and 148, how did it stop and turn around at 135?

From what I remember seeing years ago, what they operators did was run the empty train south of 135th, switch ends, run light through the middle track at that location to north of the station, then switch ends again and enter the station to pick up the waiting passengers for the trip to 148th. This is what it looked like to me, but I could be missing a detail or more.

I can't understand the purpose of the track layout at 135 St (2,3). It made turning the shuttle so inconvenient, but beyond that, I cannot figure out its original intention. Are the columns between the tracks situated in such a way that they make re-configuring those switches impossible?

For some strange reason, the IRT had a couple of locations configured that way. At one time, there was a middle tk between the Lex Av exp tks at Spring St and the location of the columns seems to indicate that it was similar to 135 St.

That’s exactly the way it operated and it required 2 T/Os to do the move one at each end. I suspect that if that operation were done today, it would be done like the T/Sq shuttle with 2 OPTO qualified T/Os and no C/R. Actually back in the early IRT days, the Lenox shuttle which only operated from 145 St, operated into the S/B exp tk at 96 St and turned back to the N/B exp tk at a tail switch at the S/E of the station. The switch was removed when the 96 St station was extended south to 94 st to allow the closing of 91 St station.

Spring St sort of makes sense for a layup and/or put-in, since it could reach either Union Sq or Brooklyn Bridge. But 135th...? It can't be for single-tracking since there's a full crossover switch north of the station (unless there wasn't back in the day?). Maybe it was meant to hold put-ins from the yard without blocking the White Plains Rd junction but why wrong-rail through 145th...?

It's kind of like the weird layup tracks at 72 St and Union Sq but at least those are pointed in the direction of traffic.
