CTA could also MU their various types of wood, Baldy's and similar steel cars together too.All their PCC "L" cars and articulateds built over some years could MU. Now in the high tech world, that time has come and gone. LIRR could at one time MU everything built between 1908 and 1963. Now they can't even make an M7 and M9 kiss in revenue service, although we saw a You Tube of one hauling another on a test run. |

Yes, it was common practice to mix the 4000s with wooden el cars. Then when the State St. subway opened, all the 4000s had to be rounded up and joined together for subway service. |

I have seen a few specs for NYCT car contracts and GOHs where a specific product or its equivalent is specified and it is also specified what cars the new rolling stock is expected to be copmpatible with. If the will is there, anything is possible and in some cases compulsory. |

If we treated phones like the computers they really are and insisted on a comparable level of openness to user control, it would be very easy to run Android apps on an Iphone, or even install Android on an Iphone outright— and some nerds would have IOS installed and (barely) working on a Samsung. |

Different manufacturers certainly can build to be plug-compatible with each other. They do this all the time.HOWEVER when the plug-compatible spec is 40+ years old and filled with analog signals running over hundreds of wires and pins in between cars that have to be coupled/uncoupled in harsh weather. And the NEW technology allows you to do it all over a copper or fiber ethernet link. It really is time to make a change and abandon back-compatibility to old cars. |

I’m not saying that compatibility with older equipment has to be infinite, but when 2 contracts are being ordered very close to each other, they should at least be fully compatible. To explain further, while I don’t think the NTTs should be compatible with R-46s or 68s, It wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that the R-143s, 160s 179s and possibly even the R-211s be fully compatible. After that the first batch of NTTs should be old enough that they are ready for scrapping and the next generation of cars ready for design and production. On the other hand, upgrading for its own sake doesn’t make much sense if the so called “improved” product is nt actually improved at all and might not be worth the cost of a so called upgrading. |
