Over the years, I always looked up at the Twin Towers as I drove past them, because after the 1993 attack, I had the overwhelming impression that they would one day be gone.I wasn't alone in that suspicion. One of our big EMS Chiefs, Paul Maniscalco, used to teach Incident Command seminars for us, and at the end of the course, he always said someday, terrorists would destroy the WTC. He was a serious advocate of keeping the top brass separated from high-profile locations for this exact reason. So what happens on 9/11? They put the command post IN THE LOBBY of WTC 1. The result old Chief Maniscalco predicted years before, came to pass. FDNY lost the entire top echelon of the department in one hour, an irreplaceable brain trust. There's always that one guy who has it figured out, but everybody ignores him. |
