[PHOTOS] Attack Of The Redbirds !!!!

(April 1985) The roof of the municipal parking garage made for some spectacular photography. The garage is no more, sold to developers. (March 2001) Photographed from the Queensboro Plaza station platform. The Twin Towers beckons. (November 1984) Entering Queensboro Plaza. (March 2001) Back to the garage roof top. That is a great collection of photographs. The last one in particular was taken from a train just south of the East 180th Street Shops. This was a favorite location to photograph the line up of equipment in the yard. Many pictures have been taken at this same site over the years. However the graffiti alkaline wash gave them some serious rust issues. That is a great collection of photographs. The local track (and express service) was out of service due to QB viaduct reconstruction. Temporary platform extentions were built from Rawson St to 52nd St. making it essentially a 2 track line between QBP & Woodside.

Also consider when the redbirds were retrofitted with A/C, that added appx 10,000lbs. to their weight. AFAIK, there were no modifications to their traction motors, still running 100hp per axle from the factory, and they still ran like rabbits.

They accelerated better and their dynamic brakes were much better. Plus they had inverter lighting systems so that the lights didn't blink out going over gaps in the third rail. Unfortunately rust got to almost all of them.
