Very impressive. Now do the same for grade crossings between Babylon and Patchogue.

Not NEARLY as necessary as the mainline, and later the Ronkonkoma Branch

I'l miss all the 80MPH horn-blowing.
Have to head east of Hicksvile to Ronkonkoma for that.

Sorry to tell you but 9 times out of 10, east of Hicksville on the PJ branch, those diesels BARELY make it to 45 or 50, let alone to 79/80.

Not for any deficiency in the equipment, it's constant restrictions for Curves and even if there weren't curves the Bridges likely can't take it. In most places you're throttled back.

Technically, no grade crossing elimination would be necessary if we didn't have scofflaw drivers.

True. But human nature is what it is...

And these scofflaw drivers do not just risk their own lives- witness the passengers who died in the MNRR grade-crossing crash in 2015...

In my opinion, no heavily used (like LIRR and MNRR) grade crossings should exist on any busy road in any crowded metropolitan area.

For example, maybe the freight crossings on Staten Island at South Avenue and Western Avenue are ok, as the former is used a few times a week, and the latter is not in a congested area. The SBK crossing of 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn is also ok, as it's seldom used at all, and when it is TA personnel stop vehicular traffic. But anything busier than these should be separated.

That is bullshit. Grade crossings on busy rail lines are a huge pain, regardless of safety.

And even more so grade crossings of busy roads over busy tracks. You not only get delayed for the time the train is crossing, but also until all the stopped traffic ahead of you has crossed.

Well, I've never had the urge to run a railroad crossing, so does that make me superhuman?

It makes you a railfan because whenever you see a railroad crossing you are HOPING a train comes thru.

Which is the main reason why the main line grade crossing eliminations are taking place. Nassau County isn't rural anymore.

It hasn't been rural for at least 50 years. Whatever the design flaws of the 3rd tracking project, I am glad to see these crossings separated.

As a railfan, I like looking at crossings, seeing the lights and bells, etc. But I also know that the accidents that inevitably occur at crossings make railroads look bad to anti-rail politicians. So in places like Nassau, they need to go. Same on the Ronkonkoma line, as someone else posted.

There are some awesome crossings in West Palm Beach, Florida, right by City Place. Huge gantries... Route 60, on Florida's west coast also has some cool-looking crossings just east of Brandon. But I'm sure the use of these Florida is minor, compared to the LIRR mainline.

Agree. In 2007, I was working in Central Islip, and I observed that crossing on Carman Avenue. What a nightmare it was- even for road traffic, in rush hour.

Who says? There are well-publicized cases of road vehicles ending up on railroad tracks where no crossings exist. Never mind "pedestrians" (trespassers).
