There were a few rail boards that everyone dispersed to. But the strength of the community seemed to have always been this sort of direct response layout, whereas the others were the list type message boards, where each message displays below the prior, regardless of who you are responding to. Conversation is much easier in this format, as you can respond to everyone as a whole, or individually, and directly.

We all reluctantly went to the alternate sites (most of which were up and running prior to the SubTalk shut down at the time anyway. When it was discovered that a duplicate to SubChat opened, it didn't take long for it to take off and fully replace SubTalk.

What also made SubChat superior to SubTalk was the use of an off topic board. Off Topic was always an issue on the old board, and this way people can discus rail topics and avoid off topic completely, or engage in other conversation, without annoying the primary board. Off topic was inevitable, so it was genius.

One peak hour morning on the Franklin Shuttle, I was alerted to a "suspicious package" by a passenger. It was a small tied up black plastic bag under a seat. I thought "hell, I doubt if somebody wants to blow up the Franklin Shuttle". So I picked it up and opened it. Inside was an empty coffee cup and paper that probably once had a roll or bagel inside.

When I was in college in the late 80s-early 90s, I worked in a bank. One of my co-workers was this very eccentric older woman (let's call her "Mrs. Gold").

Anyway, one day, someone phoned in a bomb threat, and said the device was in a garbage can. Of course, everyone was evacuated, and there was a massive response from emergency personnel. Unsurprisingly, it was a false alarm. When it was all over, Mrs. Gold said "what's the big freaking deal? I knew there was no bomb- I answered when he called a half hour ago, and I went around and shook all the garbage cans".

So I guess Mrs. Gold was right- but what if she'd been wrong? I may never have become a member of Subchat!!

True story told to me by the former Governor of North Dakota.

He and his family were making a picnic of things in the back yard when the state police called him saying that there was a suspicious package in the driveway by the garage, and would he go around and take a look at it.

The joys of being a small state governor.

Another time some Washington pigwigs were coming into the state, and so he drove over to the airport to meet them.Maybe they did not realize that the governor himself came to fetch them. He carried their bags, and tossed them in the pickup bed, and then drove them to the mansion.

The joys of being a small state governor.

Let's see Coumo doing that!

I guess they were good cars, but strictly as a passenger/enthusiasts. They were boring to me. I don't really remember them in the dark color (olive green?), but they were boring in the red, and really bad in the Ronan silver/blue (which at least made all the classes of cars that were sullied by it look equally bad). Their final Redbird scheme helped some, but by then, I no longer lived in NY and saw them very rarely (last time was sometime during my July 1991 visit, saw them on a C on the local track as I rode an R-44 A on the express track on Fulton St). They were gone by my next visit in June 1994. Funny thing, their IRT cousins (R26/R28) didn't bother me, probably because they were in mixed consists, maybe only 2 or 4 per train (on the 2/4/5), even on the 6, maybe at max 6 cars in a 10 car consists, otherwise R-17s/R-29s/R-33.

I didn’t find the R-27/30s any smoother braking than the R-32s although I found both much smoother than the R-38s through 42s. As far as mixed consists on the IRT by the time the redbirds were all GOhed, they were operating in straight unmixed consists like the 30s on the BMT/IND.

The R27/30 were numerous but unremarkable. They were purchased to enable the retirements of many Standards and all of the multi-section cars. My memory of their early years has them serving on local runs such as the RR and the QB/QT while the express runs like the N, Q, and T got new R32 cars a few years later which replaced all the remaining Standard and Triplex cars on the Southern Division. After November 1967 when the BMT and IND were merged they could be found all over the system. Many wound up on the BMT Eastern Division replacing the unreliable GE R16 cars. When the IRT redbirds went through GOH and the R62 and R62A were in service all the remaining older single cars such as R17/21/22 were retired eliminating the dog's breakfast consists that were common on all lines except the 7. The R26/28/29/33/36ML cars were considered interchangeable after GOH although I rode on many solid consists of R33ML cars on the 2 and 5 lines.

Yep, and rejoined with their proper mates (except the ones on the 6 which were always properly matched). On the 2/4/5, more often than not, you'd have a 26 paired with a 28 (i.e. 7758/7921).
