I guess they were good cars, but strictly as a passenger/enthusiasts. They were boring to me. I don't really remember them in the dark color (olive green?), but they were boring in the red, and really bad in the Ronan silver/blue (which at least made all the classes of cars that were sullied by it look equally bad). Their final Redbird scheme helped some, but by then, I no longer lived in NY and saw them very rarely (last time was sometime during my July 1991 visit, saw them on a C on the local track as I rode an R-44 A on the express track on Fulton St). They were gone by my next visit in June 1994. Funny thing, their IRT cousins (R26/R28) didn't bother me, probably because they were in mixed consists, maybe only 2 or 4 per train (on the 2/4/5), even on the 6, maybe at max 6 cars in a 10 car consists, otherwise R-17s/R-29s/R-33. |
