50 8th ave station

Posted by baltimorerail on Tue Aug 13 20:33:59 2019

Why is there a platform between the express tracks on the 59th platform on the 8th avenue line?
Why is it not used?

From www.nycsubway.org:

"The center island was originally used for unloading of passengers and is no longer used due to difficulty in opening doors on both sides of the train, and to eliminate the resulting confusion of which platform is for what service."

It’s called the “Spanish Solution”

Passengers board from one platform and get off via the other as a method of reducing crowding.

Back when the R9's ran on the A and D it was easy for a platform conductor to open the doors on the center platform from outside the train while the train's conductor opened the doors on the other side, but it was much more difficult with newer cars, so they stopped using the platform. Part of the center platform is now used as a transfer corridor between the north and southbound #1 line.

Newer cars with full width cabs can once again use this feture if they wantred. Open the center platform first, let the geese exit, open the right platform and let peeps on. Close the center close the Right aand off we go!

The platform was used only during rush hours and rush hour dwell times are longer than off peak anyhow.

But they used platform conductors so opening and closing the doors on both sides added little time.

11 cars had two conductors and those were only on the E and F and not the A and D.

A and D has 2 C/Rs with 10 car trains. I’m not sure of the exact chronology of the opening of the center platform, but I don’t believe it was used until the elimination of the 2nd C/R which was circa 1956. What I do know is that at the C/R’s position on the center platform, an emergency button connected to then59 St tower was installed which was energized by insertion of a special key obtained from the T/D’s office on the center platform. In the event that a passenger were to be caught in a door, the platform C/R would press the button and it would drive the stop arm up on the leaving home signal tripping the train. The S/B button would affect the lvg signal on the S/B exp tk and the N/B button would affect the lvg signal on the N/B exp tk. The platform was open only to trains in the peak direction of traffic, S/B in the AM rush and N/B in the PM rush. The set up worked OK with any cars equipped with caps and triggers but proved to be problematic when cars with in cab door controls were introduced so the use of the center platform was discontinued. With cars up to the R-42s, not only did the C/R have to change sides but also change cars resulting in increased dwell time. Now, however, with transverse cabs, the C/R can remain in the same cab so that if desired, the use of the center platform could be resumed since the resulting dwell time increase would be insignificant as compared with the older equipment.
