A and D has 2 C/Rs with 10 car trains. I’m not sure of the exact chronology of the opening of the center platform, but I don’t believe it was used until the elimination of the 2nd C/R which was circa 1956. What I do know is that at the C/R’s position on the center platform, an emergency button connected to then59 St tower was installed which was energized by insertion of a special key obtained from the T/D’s office on the center platform. In the event that a passenger were to be caught in a door, the platform C/R would press the button and it would drive the stop arm up on the leaving home signal tripping the train. The S/B button would affect the lvg signal on the S/B exp tk and the N/B button would affect the lvg signal on the N/B exp tk. The platform was open only to trains in the peak direction of traffic, S/B in the AM rush and N/B in the PM rush. The set up worked OK with any cars equipped with caps and triggers but proved to be problematic when cars with in cab door controls were introduced so the use of the center platform was discontinued. With cars up to the R-42s, not only did the C/R have to change sides but also change cars resulting in increased dwell time. Now, however, with transverse cabs, the C/R can remain in the same cab so that if desired, the use of the center platform could be resumed since the resulting dwell time increase would be insignificant as compared with the older equipment.
