Just a raw cut of the pillars of the el and they left them there like that.

They removed them later since the rest of the pillars were below ground. That's how els were demolished for years.

Note that the 2 Av el tk on the IRT side seems to have subway type 3rd rail installed meaning that the photo was taken sometime after 1942 when the 2 Av el ceased all operations.

Of course that area has been much more built up since.

I've noted before in a rebuild I would do it where after Navy Street such would go underground and connection to the Montague Street line, in this case potentially allowing for a new, full-time (W) train from Myrtle to Astoria.

The pillar foundations for the 6th Ave el were not extracted until the 1990's.

Maybe 6th Ave was the exception.

Bill, the Harris Structural Steel removed the 6th Ave el pillars to just below street level. Actual structural demolition began on Jan 10th, 1939 and finished on/about April 14th of that year. LaGuardia and Company wanted it gone ASAP. Some of the el pillar bases were incorporated into the new 6th Ave IND subway.

My father lived in the building on the right (second floor) during the summer of 1972. I was living with my mother in Urbana, IL at that time, but I spent the summer in Brooklyn with my grandmother. On 2 occasions that summer, my grandmother had to travel to her native North Carolina. Once in June when her older brother fell ill. He subsequently died, and she returned in July for his services. Both of those times, I stayed with my father. I'm guessing I would have had a good view of the el if it had still been there, but alas it was not. Still, got to see a ton of buses. I would say the headways were at least 5 minutes on midday weekdays, during the peak, even smaller. The very last time I saw an Old Look in NYC was on the B54 during one of those times. (There is a picture of one at Jay & Myrtle somewhere, maybe at nycsuwab.org or elsewhere).

Oh, so they left the base of the stairways as piles of rubble? Yeah, that and the pillar bases were major improvements to the neighborhood.

Glad that I can remember this view, and was told about the Myrtle Ave. el, a couple of years before closure so I could travel on the el, ride and photograph the Q's.

Yep. QBP is the only station in the system where there is a cross platform transfer between the IRT & BMT on two levels.

There was a period where the Dyre Av Branch was run with 2nd Av el cars. I don't what the transfer situation was like at E180th, but the Dyre Av trains I believe were run by IND crews, since the IND was supposed to get the East Bronx extension off the Concourse line.

True, they were run by IND crews but was known as an IRT division line extention.
IIRC The Flushing Line was on the BMT radio frequency, long after the seperation of the Flushing & Astoria lines, as in Flushing to the IRT & Astoria to the BMT.

It was officially an IND Division line but for some reason the Hagstrom maps showed it as an IRT line.

I used to work at 12 MetroTech, right across Jay Street from the main MetroTech campus. It really was a nice place to have lunch or just walk around. There was a collegiate feel to the place. Hard to believe it was once a hardscrabble Brooklyn neighborhood. Its much improved now.

Same for telling people in the Cadman Park area about the Sands St. complex at the same location, or people on the street near City Hall about the Park Row terminal located at the entrance to the bridge.

The area looks nothing like when the El stood there. I've personally been along 3rd Avenue (Bronx) and 168th/Jamaica, and even all these years later, the ghosts of those Els remain there. At 168th, not only is there the building that housed the tower, but at least as of 2007, there was still an old-style lamp above the doorway that served the footbridge between the station and the tower.

I was personally right there last October, and I walked on Myrtle, from Jay to Flatbush. Closely as I looked (and I looked closely), even at manhole covers, I could find no remnants whatsoever of the El. Nothing.

Sand street has a small plaque within the edge of the park telling everyone about the massive elevated train station.
