Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Apr 14 13:29:21 2019 Some remnants of the Manhattan Beach Railroad I photographed in the 80's. There are more remnants, if you know where to look. The concrete retaining wall by the Neck Rd station of the (Q) line. (October 1982) At the (B)(Q) Sheepshead Bay station. Looking through the chain link fence in the foreground, you'll see the concrete fence posts of the MBRR and not the BRT. (November 1986)

I believe there is also a tunnel under the tracks to Gravesend Race Track.

I would say the retaining wall at Gravesend Neck Rd. There were other retaining walls, but this one had the stairs to the platform. The concrete fence posts weren't as visible, there were more I have seen in the past. I haven't seen the other retaining walls in years so I don't know if they were removed for development. Check out street view of East 17th street at Avenue I and the dead end of East 18th Street. There's also an overgrown vacant lot on the east side of East 16th.

The Bushwick branch is another good example, you can still see a distinct line of empty spaces between buildings (sometimes filled with much newer buildings) in what is otherwise a moderately dense area. IIRC the 3rd Av El in the Bronx was also a private ROW for some distance.

Guess the BMT and MTA never needed the extra ROW and sold off what they could, hence the shallow lots all along E 16th on the east side of the tracks.

There is an angular building on the NW corner of East 14th and Neptune that approximates the old ROW, and then south of there, Corbin Place is the old ROW.

That is why that street is wider south of Avenue X. The recently closed fork of East 17 Street near Jerome Avenue was the path of the railroad when it ran at grade. There are pictures of the railroad crossing at Sheepshead Bay Road. It continued through the buildings through Voorhies Avenue to the point you mention at E 14 and Neptune. The yard was the block between where Corbin Place is now and West End Avenue.

The MB had a roundabout route via East New York to LIC. Once there, one had to take a ferry to East 34th Street, and then be left high and dry on the far east side, needing to take a streetcar (probably two) or the 34th Street El to the 2nd or 3rd Avenue els, requiring multiple fares and more time than the cheaper 5 cent Brighton trains that ran all the way up Broadway to Times Square via express and to Lexington Avenue via local. There was no way for the MB to compete.

However, while the current route was being built, Brighton trains temporarily shared the old MB tracks instead of building temporary tracks. Of course, this only applied south of the junction. North of there temporary tracks were used.

The ones at Belmont Park run year-round for not that many more people apart from Belmont Stakes day. They could at least post the odds of that station reopening so the guy could decide if it's worth the wait.
