He said M-9A's and has added diesel coaches to the procurement.Maybe they should convert M-3's to diesel coaches, but that would be very difficult, not as easy as the MP72's, which were traditional railroad cars that were train-lined. |

What might work is if the M9As had single units (such as the M8 singles) that would also work as engine hauled coaches. Then they could be used to pad EMU trains as well. They should just bite the bullet and electrify the Port Jefferson branch and buy more EMUs, freeing up a lot of C3s for other lines. |

That exactly what they should do, but LIRR is psychologically opposed, has been for 30 years, seems more enthused with electrifying the staion-less Central Branch, and enjoys being just the Manhattan & Ronkonkoma Railroad Company. |

Or they could just buy 20 of those MARC coaches, and be done with it.They'll probably "forget" again to lease them this summer. They love to play victim, cancel trains on other branches on Fridays, yet happy to afford to place 40 customer service reps in their polyester maroon sport jackets in NYPS to keep the crowds off the Cannonaball when it gets over-whelmed. |

I like the Wallyhorse approach: keep saying it over and over and someday it might actually happen. He's got 2 successes so far (M-V combo and reopening old South Ferry after Sandy). |

Maybe they should convert M-3's to diesel coaches, but that would be very difficult, not as easy as the MP72's, which were traditional railroad cars that were train-lined.ROFLMAO!!!!!! If you think the crappy ride quality is bad now as since they were new, imagine the traction motors and control group apparatus removed and see how nice they ride. Two of my friends are retired LIRR engineers and they both stated and echoed the complaints of their brethren of the lousy M-3 ride compared to the M-1. Next time you're riding the LIRR and you board a train of M-3's, try reading a newspaper when they are traveling at MAS. The M-3's are not long for this world, that's what the M-9 is for. Some M-3's were retired and some scrapped even though no fire or collision damage. Perhaps cracks in the frame ? Who knows. And you want the LIRR to convert them to diesel coaches when the current wave of the future and present are bi-level coaches ? Bill Newkirk |

That exactly what they should do, but LIRR is psychologically opposed, has been for 30 years, seems more enthused with electrifying the staion-less Central Branch, and enjoys being just the Manhattan & Ronkonkoma Railroad Company. As far as the Central Branch goes, there doesn't seem to much room for any stations let alone parking fields for commuters. And don't mention to local residents eminent domain as a means of securing land for a station and parking field, they'll shout so loud, you'll hear them in Jersey. Bill Newkirk |

Whenever I'm on Long Island & use the Railroad, I always try to sit in the middle where the ride quality is better. To me this is a must when ever I get an M-7 train. Last time I rode in an M-7 & sat at an end over the trucks, they were clunky rattletraps with all the squeaks & groans included. Sometimes the noise is so bad, it seems like the truck might just fall off. Making conversation is a challenge in those things. |

But I could't even spot it on a Google overhead map. But leave it to LIRR for more stupid capital priorities. |

Budd frames don't crack in 30 years. You seem to have fallen for LIRR snow jobs like the MTA has - run them into the ground so they look and ride like shit and have to be replaced. Meanwhile, the MN M-3A's look new.Fire up the pair of SW-1001 locos that were once Harold protect engines, intsall PTC (not needed east of Ronkonkoma), stick a diesel-gen-set in one of them, and haul 2 M-3's as a Yaphank Scoot back and forth all day to power their inverters. It has to go all of 45MPH. There is no wave of the future for bi-levels on the LIRR. The diesel service does not have capacity problem (except summer Fridays). It has a frequency problem. Few consists exceed 6 cars. Single level coaches would do just fine. |

When the same NIMBYs who raised objections to the use of eminent domain to acquire property complain about the lack of service improvements, they should be reminded rather vociferously that they are the ones responsible for preventing those service improvements. |

No one is proposing station on the Central Branch.Electrifying it for "flexibility" is just another stupid LRR capital priority, like the 11-track Ronkonkoma yard expansion, the brainless stuffed shirts at MTA will fall for. LIRR does not want to grow its ridership. They don't want the train volume, and they don't want the passenger revenue since it means the operating subsidy could be cut harmlessly. |
