The governor will be undertaking a tour of the L-line tunnel tomorrow night in conjunction with some expert team that he’s brought in

Wow, that shows close communications between Cuomo and Byford.

It just proves that the real head of the MTA is Prince Andrew Cuomo.

Look out, the governor is coming...……...all plans are now subject to change.

Maybe Andy should have made all the plans himself in the first place.

I wonder if Cuomo is doing this thinking ahead to a 2020 Presidential run. He may think by speeding up the process or doing it another way, it will help him get votes if he does run.

Cuomo should remember it took 14 months to rebuild the Montague tunnel.

I also would not be shocked if Cuomo orders the (L) remain running in Manhattan during the shutdown to appease some fearful of additional people driving from the lower east side and others adding onto potential traffic nightmares. As I've noted before, if that had to be done, I'd be looking at having eight four-car train sets with a maximum of three sets in use at any one time for such a service. There would just have to be some work-arounds in place if that had to be done.

I have just one question with that...

How would he expect to maintain that fleet of trains if there's NO access to a yard with the tunnel being closed??? Not to mention there's no outside access (at least the Rockaways had outdoor access to hoist the R32 cars onto tracks during Superstorm Sandy's recovery period).

Hmmm??????

there's no outside access

Um, have you been to 14th Street between 1st and A lately?

I agree Cuomo will not demand Manhattan L service. But not for the reason you state.

Can't say I have been there recently. I don't get off of Long Island much anymore because of work...and just life in general.

OK, well, outside access is already available for very large objects, though possibly not as large as a subway car. But it would be very easy to achieve access for objects the size of a subway car if they wished. But they don't wish.

Trivia: this is how cars are delivered to the Waterloo and City Line in London, which is entirely underground and is not connected to anything else. However, it has an underground maintenance facility so that this doesn’t have to be done often. The Manhattan L would not have such a facility.

Indeed.

That was my concern. There's no yard for layups or barns for inspections or maintenance.

And airlifting cars in and out for as long as the project is going to take is a massive headache....agreed and understood that NOBODY wants to undertake this.

Considering the fractional-trillion-dollar amounts of money Byford is gonna need for a whole bunch of MONUMENTAL tasks, there better be really good communications between Cuomo and Byford.

Until around 1990, Waterloo and City Line belonged to British Railways. It is sort of like our PATH, created to connect railroads with a CBD, and has nothing physically to do with the subway system, even though it looks like it and smells like it.
