Anable Basin

Posted by AlM on Tue Nov 13 12:38:59 2018

Never heard the name before, but that's where Amazon is planning to build.

Looks like it's on the East River, 3-4 blocks west of Court Square. Longer walk from Queensbridge or Queens(boro) Plaza.

More traffic for the M and G trains! And 7 passengers from Flushing will be getting off before HPA passengers get on, so there might be some capacity there.

Plus the M from Forest Hills and the N/W from Astoria have plenty of spare capacity.

It's really only the westbound 7 and E/F that can't handle lots more people. But all growth of Manhattan jobs (which is a lot more than 25K per year) impacts those lines.

I looked it up on Google Maps and saw the other name for it. This other name for the basin is an artifact title reflecting the former name of 45th Road: 11th Street. It has nothing to do with the present 11th Street, the former “Boulevard.”

From Brooklyn, you would have to ride through 6th Ave Manhattan on the "M" to Court Square. Or take a year-and-day crosstown ride on the "G", with the refugees from the "L" shutdown!

The G isn't as awful as you imply. The main problem is the lack of transfers to anything other than the A/C/F/L* in Brooklyn.

*The transfer to the R might as well not exist.

You think Amazon will be staffed up by June 2020?

They are taking over most of the Citibank building next year, but at the same time Citibank workers will be moving to Manhattan.

The overall timetable is 25,000 employees in 10 years, with potentially 45,000 in 15 years.

Speaking of light rail I see site is only about a 10 minute walk from the LIRR Long Island City terminal. I know there was a proposal to have light rail run along the LIRR Lower Montauk branch between Jamaica and LIC. This might be a great way for people from central and eastern Queens to get to the site, or the LIRR might restore passenger service on the branch to avoid overloading the Main Line once ESA opens.

I'm sure that the light rail supporters will try to make that case, but nothing in any of the Amazon, NYS, or NYC statements and documents even hint at it.

In contrast, in Arlington the documents specifically mention improvements to the Crystal City and (soon to be under construction) Potomac Yards stations.

So far. Do we know of every incentive Cuomo (going over mayor DeB's head again) offered Amazon to get to come here? IMO in time more of what went on (or under) the table will come out to encourage them to set up shop in LIC.

There could have been some more promises made, but since even the MOU is largely non-binding, those promises mean nothing.

The N/W are packed as it is and are severely limited by the Ditmars Terminal, which limits it to 15 because of the lack of tail tracks, and the slow-speed crossovers. As it is, a staircase is closed making the platforms and mezzanine really congested. They have been looking into adding crossovers to allow trains at Astoria Boulevard. The long-term solution is to extend it to LGA with a yard over ConEd. If only Amazon could chip in for these improvements-The BMT Amazon Line.

Northbound M trains in the morning aren't really packed. They can also add more of them (and will for the L shutdown) in both directions. Bite the bullet and station 5 platform conductors at Continental to clean people out fast at the last stop.

Thats one way he got to be the richest man in the world.
Having said that; what he was able to get is nothing new. Municipal tax breaks to private companies happen all the time.
Two examples come to mind. First, The Dodgers O'Malley got Chaves Ravine handed to him on a silver platter. He got the concessions, parking & various other breaks. Los Angeles wanted the Dodgers, they got 'em thanks to the incentives O'Malley got.
Next is General Motors v/s NY State.
In the mid 80s, they announced that they were closing their Tarrytown Plant. Reason given was that they could not ship their Luminas in the excess height auto carriers they needed to use to move more vehicles.
NYS countered with a proposal to raise all the bridges & overpasses so the excess height cars would fit, which they did. GM went along with this, but only promised to keep the plant open for another 5 years.
NYS signed off on the deal gambling that they would change their minds & keep the plant open way beyond 5 yrs. All this work paid (millions) for by the taxpayer.
So The Tarrytown plant did stay open longer than 5 yrs.
They they closed it in 6.

Of course. Ferry capacity sucks relative to subways, though. The entire ferry system being put into place for the L shutdown corresponds to about 1 train per hour.

There is a separate section in the Memorandum of Understanding devoted to that building.

Amazon has until March 2019 to decide if they really want the building.

If they do, the DOE will vacate by January 1, 2022.

It's up to the city to find a new location.

If the "G" was restored to/from Queens Forest Hills, it would be much better for riders wishing to go to this Amazon complex. There is no reason why they cannot terminate the "W" at Queens Plaza and have it relay on the middle track- D5. It only shares the D3 & D4 tracks with the "E" from Queens Plaza to 53rd St & 5th Ave. This way, "E", "R", and "W" riders would have access to Amazon from Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. If you don't want a 24/7 "W" service to/from Queens Plaza, have the "F" run via 63rd St, late nights.

That's called the "M" now. The M portion of 23rd/Court House Square is actually to the site than the G portion.

The W is needed to provide service to/from Astoria in excess of what the N needs to provide in Brooklyn. If you terminate the W at Queens Plaza, you need a lot more Ns.

I meant to terminate the "M" at Queens Plaza and relay back to Manhattan on the middle track, east of the station. and run the "F" as an express from 63rd St to Roosevelt Ave, and beyond. Sorry for the mistake! Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens residents could use Queens Plaza as a transfer point to catch the "G" to Court Square. that Court square elevated/subway transfer is a L-O-N-G walk!

Even with Amazon’s presence, it really makes no sense to remove a QB lcl line with direct access to Manhattan with a service than would require outer Queens passengers to change for Manhattan service just to please passengers bound for one station.

Outer Queens would still have the "E", "F", and "R". People taking the "F" would still have express service via 63rd St from Roosevelt Ave, bypassing Queens Plaza. "E" would still run express from Roosevelt Ave to Queens Plaza. The local station users between Roosevelt and QP could easily change for the "M", terminating at QP. Restoring the "G" to Forest Hills would also ease overcrowding on the already heavily used "#7" line with increased patronage to/from the Court Square complex. Unless, you want to add some rush hour 10 car "M" trains, which would short-turn at Second Ave, since the Eastern Division can only hold 8 car trains.
