You'd have to have an additional conductor aboard either the Triplex or BMT standards because their door controls don't trainline with those on the IND old timers. |

You wouldn’t need to have the doors trainline between the R-9s and the Ds. You would merely have the C/R position between the 2 types of cars so that the he/she would operate the doors on the R-9s with the triggers and the doors on the D type with the D’s operating handle. With the R-9’s drum switch set to on and the D’s door control handles unlocked, the doors in each section will work just fine, the C/R’s indication should function and the M/M’s indication circuit operates through the electric portion so there would be no problem. If Bill Wall sees this post which he probably will, he should be able to provide more detailed info than I can. |

Couldn't get the AB set or a Triplex to tag along with 6 Arnines?Three A-B's alone would be overcrowding to the max. Besides, the A-B's have door issues as I witnessed on the June Parade of Trains. They still need work. One set of D-Types #6019ABC are OOS for some time. But if operable, would three units of D's be enough ? The best hope is for #103 to return for the first time in many years and #1300's truck issue be resolved. That's all the arnines we could muster. Bill Newkirk |

In a way you could compare going from an IND/IRT control arrangement to a BMT arrangement to driving a car manual vs an automatic transmission. I'm a timpanist myself and have always set the drums up with the largest on the left and smallest on the right - the so-called Island Method - while in Austria and Germany, the setup is reversed (Continental Method). I would be totally messed up with that arrangement. That might be an even closer analogy. |

I wouldn’t liken operating trains with left handed controls vs right handed to the difference between manual and stick shift. The difference between manual and stick shift is more appropriate as a comparison between operating an ME-23 (R-9) brake and an ME-42 (SMEE) brake valve or back in IRT days between operating a Hi-V with manual 10 point acceleration and a Lo-V with 3 point automatic acceleration. |

I could never figure out how motormen could operate both left handed and right handed controls without getting very confused. It would be like driving a car with the gas peddle on the right and the brake on the left one day, and then the gas peddle on the left and the brake on the right the next. |

The BMT M/M seemed to have no trouble since some of them operated the R-1s before the IND opened and they operated both steels with a left handed brake valve and Multis with a right handed brake valves as well as the later group of R-1/9s on the 4 Av lcl in the late 1940s. Also while BMT subway cars had left handed brake valves, the BMT’s trolleys had right handed brake valves and since many BMT M/M started their careers on trolleys, they seemed to have no trouble adjusting. |
