In a way you could compare going from an IND/IRT control arrangement to a BMT arrangement to driving a car manual vs an automatic transmission. I'm a timpanist myself and have always set the drums up with the largest on the left and smallest on the right - the so-called Island Method - while in Austria and Germany, the setup is reversed (Continental Method). I would be totally messed up with that arrangement. That might be an even closer analogy.
