[PHOTO] Identify The Location |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Nov 11 13:00:46 2018 Caption states "Bronx", but I believe it's downtown Manhattan. Is this the 3rd Ave el South Ferry Branch ? Is that the Brooklyn Bridge on the upper right hand corner ? Bill Newkirk |

"Is that the Brooklyn Bridge on the upper right hand corner ?"I'd say yes to downtown Manhattan & yes, thats the Brooklyn Bridge. If you blow the picture up, you can see a faint image of one of the Manhattan Bridge towers. |

This link , 2nd from the bottom, locates it and dates it as no later than 1907. This link also gives some history 1/3 way down. The electrification date of the El now narrows the date of Bill N's original picture considerably.Bill |

According to a Google search, Bradley & Smith Brushes -- you can make out their sign by blowing up the photo -- were located at 251 Pearl Street. |

This was before they were razed and taller buildings were erected. So it is the South Ferry branch. Bill Newkirk |

Hello BillThat view is looking north along the 3rd Avenue (or 2nd Ave line) running above Pearl Street, lower Manhattan, just where the 3rd Ave El structure turns right (or east) into Coenties Slip S Curve. The train is heading south towards Coenties and soon South Ferry Terminal. You can see the south end of the Hanover Square single center island platform station between the two tracks in the distance. Yes, I have found a number of that entities' captions or dates quite wrong -- and emailed them --- never any reply or correction to photos I indicated data issues with. Regards - Joe F |

I thought the orientation in my photo 2:24pm yesterday made it obvious exactly where this had to be but apparently not.Regarding the captions, from scanning them I think they simply didn't have the money to allocate to having someone spend more than 20 seconds per picture, let alone someone who would do some digging to sort them out. I guess we should be grateful they got posted at all. Bill |
