Dramatic much? There was no reason for 2/4/6 car trains not to use ATO except for some sense of CYA.

Per the linked article, the ATO will only be used during rush hours. They don't want to trust it during non-rush hours?

They have concerns about using ATO if workers might be on the tracks. Seems odd to me they claim to have the ability to press a button that can suspend ATO systemwide but they can't only suspend it in or near work zones.

By that logic (which appears somewhat disconnected from reality) why not extend it to 8 car trains?

Except it isn't the first time, they used it on the Red Line for a bit in 2015. Gotta love Adam Tuss's sensational reporting...

Related question for you John, IIRC the system that prevents the doors opening when a train is improperly berthed is a component of ATP that works regardless of whether or not the doors are set in auto/manual, auto/auto, or manual/manual correct?

'Claim' is the operative word. Automatic Train Operation is to my knowledge a 100% train board function.

I guess the real concern is that operators may get complacent and not pay attention for workers on the tracks or whether it should be enabled or disables, so they are going with the easy route of always on for some hours, always off for others.

amazing (or maybe not) that transit agencies refuse to emulate real RR safety rules. Not that the Class 1s don't screw up, but at least they have evolved procedures that mostly keep trackworkers safe, Amtrak excepted. Recent thread about BART being fined for killing two during a strike.

It's the exact opposite, WMATAs' safety rules are convoluted and over complicated to the point of being contradictive.

The rule book runs over 1,200 pages. Internally it is know as the brick.

Back in the day operators were required to make at least one run in manual mode during their shift to keep sharp at that skill.
