what you show in the first pic is Chesapeake & O not Baltimore & Ohio which always featured a Capitol Dome--either a cast plaque or lated a painted emblem.

The LIRR one shown killed the engineer. He never had a chance.
I think it wasa gravel truck, and some of that gravel is stil laying around to the side of that crossing.

The remaining LIRR RDC was traded to the B&O, survived early MARC service, in return for B&O butt-end observation car "Napannee"

My mistake. I A S S U M E D it was B & O as I read the faded Ohio on the upper portion of the Car.

Were there only two Budd RDC's on the LIRR?

If so, rode on them in the late '50's or early '60's. ,from Oakdale to Babylon when Babylon station was at grade level.

Except for a brief Budd RDC demo, they were the only 2 LIRR ever had.

I guessed the LIRR had more , for service on the Babylon/Patchogue Scoot and for Greenport service.

The location is somewhere on Long Island. The light poles are typical of Belt Parkway and Northern/Southern Parkways.

The location is Queens, that's the Cross Island Pkwy in the background.
That archway on the parkway, although fenced in after abandonment of the Creedmoor Branch,
remained intact for may years until the parkway was rebuilt.

Haha, I have an LIRR book that basically said the same thing about another pic. :-)

Fast disappearing are the days when it wasn't that hard to couple any 2 passenger cars together.

I had my suspicions, but which side of the cross island is it, east or west?
I can't be sure judging by the shadows.

An MP-54 hitting a gravel truck would have probbably destroyed the first third to half of the first car....

C&O used what looked to be a gas electric trailer--as in shorter, lighter weight but not a real "lightweight" behind an RDC on trains between Newport News and Charlottesville.

Maybe that's part of the reason why the LIRR didn't continue with those RDC's or any others. :-S

Budds did very well on many roads; were tried and got rid of on others. excellent in commuter, local service tasks. And, in B&O's case did nicely between Phl (lter BAL) and PGH. Served lunch in a dining section. One of the two such modified RDC 2s is at the B&O Museum in Baltimore.

Wow, the B&O ran an RDC all the way to Pittsburgh? SEPTA is barely considering doing service out from Harrisburg.

Didn't the CNJ and/or Conrail also have a modified car for the Wall Street Express and/or the Crusader?

A T54 or P54 ?
T54's had no marker lights, though had MU cables.

When on the Patchogue Scoot, they hauled BM62 RPO car 7743. An MU would haul it in from Penn Station.

They ran on all the diesel lines at one time or another, except the Port Jeff, which had no use for a 2 car train.

Depends on the MP54. The arch roof ones has 12" collision posts as did the MP54A1 (clerestory) of 1930. The prior ones had 5" posts, and would readily telescope in wrecks. In diesel service, the clerestory roof P54's were banned from front and rear after the wrecks. The clerestory roof PB54's combines had seats removed. None of those survived the late 50's modernization era.

The RVC wreck on gauntlet track neatly sliced the arch roof MP54 down the middle, but left the cab portion and collision post intact. Engineer survived.

Reading Company bought 1-ea RDC2 & RDC3 from the Boston & Maine in the 1960s and rebuilt both with a snack bar in the former baggage sections for the conversion of the Philly-Newark service to self propelled, bi-directional train sets. Even though the service lost money RDG wanted to provide a little something extra for the riders on this route. The cars were staffed only for the Crusader & Wall Street trains and carried "Refreshment Car" labeling on the sides. The RDC3 survives in excursion service for Reading & Northern with a fully functional lunch counter section:

I dont think that LIRR told them, and I don't know if they found out, LIRR was conscious of the issue, and decided to go ahead anyway. I intentionally void warranties that way too. What the heck, it belongs to us and we will do as we please. If there is an issue later that is on us, but guess what... The LIRR has enough mechanical ability and forces to fix things. They do not need the warranty.
