Re: Former Cortland St Station

Ok, I went yesterday and got a good look for myself.

I like it. It fits well with the Oculus. I do think the mosaics will be very hard to maintain, though. They should have either used the flat-white look throughout, or put the wording into the tiles, IND-style.

Grand, Contract 1-4 styles can be used elsewhere, like Rector on the R/W (jackhammer that 1971 bathroom look to shit).

In other postings, I've lamented the loss of the IND look at 8th Ave (L), Fulton (J/Z) and Broad Street. But I do agree the BRT/BMT looks installed look great.

That seems right. I don't remember exactly when, but at some point in the past few years, the station area was in nearly complete daylight as PA work was going on.

And this was after the tunnel, and a shell matching the 1918 station, were built right after 9/11. All that work was subsequently demolished.

I finally got a look at the station, and to say I was unimpressed with the construction is an understatement. The station is ALREADY falling apart to wit:
1) On the uptown platform, it now pretty obvious that the "raised letters" and mosaic background tiles are not stone, Why? Because they are already breaking and chipping off, showing the wood supports they were mounted on. In fact, one section of the wall was cordoned off because not only the paneling, but the station sign had fallen off.
2) Again on the uptown platform, the wallpaper for the printed words are now bubbling. A LOT.

Maybe we should have just gone with patching the pre-9/11 station instead of a renovation. At least it was better built. :-(

The pre-9/11 station could not be patched; it was completely destroyed.

Maybe the wallpaper is only temporary, pending permanent replacement.

The mosaic is partially completed underneath the wallpaper.

It wasn't. A portion of it was caved in, but not the whole station. They did end up demolishing it later.

They also built a shell in 2002 that was configured the same as was done in 1918, but that was demolished during construction of the Oculus.

The wallpaper on the uptown platform is temporary as a "place holder" until they install the rest of the "artwork" with the raised letters like on the southbound side.

It looks like the southern quarter and a little bit at the north end of the station is at least partially from the 2002 reconstruction.
The ends of the station look like classic duel contracts.

Hmmm...it might have some support columns, but I use the 1 pretty often. In my recent memory, the area was completely exposed to daylight for a while (and some daylight was visible at the NW corner just a few months ago). I think the entire 2002 reconstruction, at least of the station area itself (which would be most of the reconstruction) was demolished.

As we know, they wanted no supporting columns- but maybe the column-free zone couldn't be quite as big as they wanted, they installed a few at the station ends. If I get a chance, I'll explore on foot...

I like the look of the whole job. But I think those mosaics will be very very very hard to clean and maintain.
