space on crowded subway cars

Posted by rbseabeach on Tue Jul 17 12:30:14 2018

There has been an advertising campaign to try to increase available space by removing back packs etc; They even have MTA personel on busy platforms such as Grand Central to load people jnto crowded trains. They even removed seats and made other changes to increase interior capacity, finally a few new cards will have an open gangway.

Now..
last week I boarded a downtown 5 @ East 180th Street @ 5:45 PM.
A man boarded @ Simpson St with a large bicycle, another boarded @ Intervale Ave with a baby carriage finally someone @ East 149th / 3rd Ave boarded with a shopping cart. The train was really starting to get crowded by 125th.
By the time we reached 59th it was a sardine can.
You can only imagine what it was like @ GC.
The bike, baby carriage and shopping cart were still there with their owners.
I was trying to figure out how much additional space was taken up by these items.
Since the MTA is trying to increase space in subway cars, shouldn't something be done about these items? Maybe new rules prohibiting these items at certain times?
What do you guys think?

There are rules. There is enforcement. Rules are useless; unless they are respected and ENFORCED.

Who should enforce it?

Before a passenger boards the train, something like the Cone of Silence should drop over him (but perhaps with an open top). If the cone fits, the passenger can board. If not, he's told to take a hike.

Wouldn’t work if a passenger has some sort of a disability that causes the cone not to fit. Then it would be a violation of ADA.

Well, the point about enforcement goes back to the concept of limited government and the character of people. Bad character means lawlessness.

The ADA is bad law.

Nobody rides the subway anymore; it's too crowded. (Paraphrasing Yo-Gi-Oh Berra.)

It's an indication that more trains need to be operated at the time you boarded.

A 5:45pm boarding in the upper Bronx, is the rush hour shoulder at best. The are operating fewer trains than the did an hour an a half previously. It's a question of the MTA not scheduling a sufficient number of trains for the time periods people want to ride.

Thank you!
I only decided to bring this up because I see that the MTA is trying to increase space by removing seats etc.
THese measures are quite costly, then I witness this which is preventable and it is allowed.

They would have a special cone for those with special needs, but one would need a special permit or pass in order to use it.

Some people live in areas where you MUST ride the train to get to a decent supermarket for grocery shopping for instance. There are a number of "food deserts" throughout and unless you're willing to pay say a $15-20 fee in some cases for delivery you only have that option in some cases.

As for baby carriages, some people have to take them on because they can't drive or are going to an area where driving is a massive headache at best.

The bikes, on the other hand, there is no excuse. There is no need to have THOSE on the subway in rush hour.
