I'm not an expert, but on the older cars with the small cabs, you could hear the telephone bell every time the speed restriction dropped. I believe the engineer had to respond in two ways: hit an acknowledgement button and drop the speed appropriately. The system worked so well over decades that I (again non-expert) see no need for Positive Train Control in territory that was so-equipped.--- Approaching Jamaica, you could hear the telephone bell ring repeated as the train entered slower and slower trackage. |

I'm not an expert on it either, but a single continuous ring was a drop in MAS that probably had to be acknowledged. New to me is the burst of rings which probably marks an increase to MAS. |

I've always assumed it was based on speed and the moving block the driver was getting too close to the train in front and to reduce speed. I fully admit this is all based on observation and I have no real idea of what it does. |

ON the newest LIRR and M/N cars, in addition to sounding when the train needs to slow down, it also sounds periodically, to alert the engineer to press the acknowledge button to avoid a brake application. This is a replacement for the traditional deadman’s button which required the engineer to either hold down the controller handle or keep it turned to avoid a BIE. Such a system is not used on rapid transit systems since the stations are too close together to make such a system useful. |
