ON the newest LIRR and M/N cars, in addition to sounding when the train needs to slow down, it also sounds periodically, to alert the engineer to press the acknowledge button to avoid a brake application. This is a replacement for the traditional deadman’s button which required the engineer to either hold down the controller handle or keep it turned to avoid a BIE. Such a system is not used on rapid transit systems since the stations are too close together to make such a system useful.
