Where art thou tunnelrat ? Reading the sign may provide a clue.
I'm thinking the abandoned Myrtle Ave station, just north of DeKalb Ave,

From the wording on that old sign, the location is an old station or passageway in Brooklyn.

From the way the station has been described to me by the old timers, I suspect that it is the Manhattan bound entrance to the Myrtle Av (Gold ST) station. The S/B side was completely obliterated when the Dekalb/Gold area was realigned circa 1960 and in any case the sign indicates that it is heading towards Manhattan and Queens. Strangely, although the Manhattan bound platform and exit is still there for use as an emergency exit I never set foot on that platform, but I was on the S/B platform in 1956 since my father mistakenly thought that we could transfer to the Myrtle Av el there. Since there is no Xover between the S/B and N/B platform there, we had to go south to Dekalb to get a N/B train back to Canal St where we changed for the Jamaica line to Bway/Myrt.

From what I remember of the S/B side when I was there, there was really no true mezzanine just a small fare control area which is why we couldn’t cross from the S/B to the N/B platform.

though the platform was destroyed during the realightment, wouldn't this small upper fare control area have remained in place - tiles and all? could there possibly be ladder access to this area from track level?

And aren't there supposed to be original station tiles still remaining intact on the wall of the former SB platform, and under how many layers of grime if cleaned away, you would still be able to see the colored tile bands and the Myrtle Ave. station name tablet.

According to this terrific website, the access to the mezzanine from the existing platform is walled off.

Thanks for the link. I did find this site, with it's excellent platform and ROW photos a few months back.

The photos here (including the walled off stairway to the mezz.) are of the northbound platform.

I was asking if anything remained of the Soutnbound mezzanine, whose former platform had been removed during the re-alignment reconstruction - My first sentence did not make that completely clear:

re: "though the platform was destroyed during the realightment, wouldn't this small upper fare control area have remained in place - tiles and all?"

If just the SB platform was destroyed, might the SB mezzanine still be intact, and like I wondered, maybe there is ladder access to it, from the current ROW constructed during the realightment?

Also from my earlier post, I've been told that the original SB platform wall tiles are still in place (under layers of grime), with the colored tile bands, and the Myrtle Ave. name tablets - it would be great if sections of the former could be removed and installed in the mezzanine at Dekalb - much the same way the tiles and Eagles from the IRT Union Sq. abandoned local platform were removed and installed in the mezzanine there.
------------------------------------------------

The LTV Squad site (http://ltvsquad.com/2005/09/03/transi-scope/) also went to the NB platform and stated that another visit was made in 2010 and to quote:

"the entire mezzanine was destroyed. It seems that a new building was built on top of this entrance, and a thick concrete wall was nstalled at the entrance from the platform."

the 2005 LTV visit does show photos of the NB mezzanine, with (unfortunately) graffittee covered tiling, and what looks like pictures of girders from the recent construction.

Also, a vent was built right in the middle of that "Enter This Side" sign in the original post's photo (unless there's another tiled sign like it up there as well)

I'm fascinated by the signage. Why does it say "via 7th Avenue and 60th Street" when that's only a small part of the line in Manhattan? Why doesn't it say Whitehall, Canal Street, etc, and especially Broadway when the bulk of the BMT goes up Broadway. And why does it have To Manhattan and To Queens separately when most subway signage would say To Manhattan and Queens?

It does make mention of changing at Canal St for the centre St Line. As for Whitehall, you couldn't get to Whitehall directly from Myrtle (Gold St) since Myrtle only accessed the Manny B, not the tunnel.

Thank you!
I like the old signage with the original names - gives the routes character, and citing the destination terminals or branch lines (like to Bay Ridge for example [on other signs that is]), gives a mental map/ association for the geography of that part of the city the line serves - and also makes these routes sound like "real" railroads.

The "7", the "4", and the "N", just doesn't do it for me.

I agree. When I first became a T/D in 1970, In the space on the train register sheet marked for “line” I would write the old BMT line name instead of the letter like “Brighton Beach Express” instead of “D,” or "West End” instead pf “B” etc.

It's sort of possible to see what appears to be a tiled wall where the SB platform was. Usually requires the train to be stopped or moving very slowly to allow your eyes to adjust, and being on an NTT with bright lighting helps.

On a related note, Myrtle Ave clearly had walls between the local and express tracks like all other 4 Av local stations; when passing by Masstransiscope tiles can be seen on the wall to the left side of the train.

I've never been able to see tiles where the S/B PLATFORM was - only on the curtain wall side. The location is right where the track splits, with one track diving down on the left - you can see tiles above the ramp that's heading down. The track on the right is where the original platform was, but I've never been able to see anything there.
