He'd be better off insisting on fewer regulations so that private-sector higher-speed rail can make a comeback from when the government squashed it in the 50s and 60s when the private sector was trying to make a go of it. He's supporting his own demise and the eventual further dismantlement of more railroads, never mind fewer places for his locomotives to run. |

We had Staggers Rail Deregulation around 1979, which in turn lead to tens of thousand of miles of abandonment and downgrades, even of secondary mainlines, like the ex-Pennsy Fort Wayne Line, and CSX S-line.. The Class I's will not run passenger trains, no way, no how. It is not their "core business". |

No analogy.SEPTA was under-funded due to a lack of state funding, now shored up by a hiked gas tax. Amtrak gets it largest appropriation ever for the National Network (read non-NEC), and they still shoot from the hip and cancel even pre-approved charter trains on shore notice, with tickets already sold. |

This is what you get putting an airline man in charge rather than a railroad man.Right now the Maple Leaf has tables on both sides of the cafe rather than split between tables and Business Class. Cafe prices are high with no extra passenger revenue. Then they cry they lose money on food cars! |

Maples Leaf and Adirondack consists have to be identical for the summer, with no Amfleet-2's at all since they have to swap in GCT overnight to cycle cars to REN shops (train 64 also terminates at A-R with an equipment swap) and stock the food service cars. These had been Sunnyside based trains.The menu prices are ridiculous due to the food service deficit, and their inability to think out of the box. |
