Avid: Thank you for those great photographs. The first picture is east to date. The movie "Bad Men of Missouri" was released in 1941. The co-feature which received top billing was released in 1939.

I believe that the second picture featuring car 31 was much earlier. Maybe 1910-20?. I say this because of the style of clothing the people are wearing.

Larry, here's another entry for the Book of Last Runs.

On June 17, 1956, service ended on the #49 Western streetcar route in Chicago. It also marked the end for the flock of Blue Geese, Chicago's prewar PCC streetcars (although ironically by this time they were no longer blue, but Everglade Green and cream). One car, 4021, survives at IRM and is on static display, cosmetically restored to its original 1936 paint scheme. After this date, only two streetcar routes were still in operation: 36-Broadway (only the northern half; the southern half along State St. was converted to bus operation on December 5, 1955) and the entire #22 Clark-Wentworth route. All service was provided by two-man Green Hornets.

The fourth photo can be dated to 1945 or 1946 as "The Crimson Canary" was released in late 1945.

When and why were the Gas-Turbine cars permanently removed from service?

Did they see service on other branches besides Oyster Bay?

Thanks.

Far Rock: I've been up north for a few days so I couldn't get right back to you.

Unfortunately there is conflicting information about the service dates of these cars. They were in service on the LIRR from 1976 to late 1977. The four cars built by Pullman-Standard and Garett were eventually shipped back to UMTA (4001-4004). The four Budd/GE cars (4005-4008) were converted to straight electric and transferred to the Metropolitan Region of Conrail. They were used as a four car set on the electrified sections of the Harlem and Hudson Lines. I do not believe that they ever ran for Metro-North. They were laid up for some years in the yard under the Waldorf Hotel and eventually scrapped.

I know that they saw service on the LIRR Oyster Branch and were used in test service on the Montauk Branch.

If anyone has more complete information about these cars would you please post it here.
