Re: Tuscarora Almanac for JUne 17

When and why were the Gas-Turbine cars permanently removed from service?

Did they see service on other branches besides Oyster Bay?

Far Rock: I've been up north for a few days so I couldn't get right back to you.

Unfortunately there is conflicting information about the service dates of these cars. They were in service on the LIRR from 1976 to late 1977. The four cars built by Pullman-Standard and Garett were eventually shipped back to UMTA (4001-4004). The four Budd/GE cars (4005-4008) were converted to straight electric and transferred to the Metropolitan Region of Conrail. They were used as a four car set on the electrified sections of the Harlem and Hudson Lines. I do not believe that they ever ran for Metro-North. They were laid up for some years in the yard under the Waldorf Hotel and eventually scrapped.

I know that they saw service on the LIRR Oyster Branch and were used in test service on the Montauk Branch.

If anyone has more complete information about these cars would you please post it here.
