Terrible delays on Queens Blvd today + Recent lack of holding lights at 36th/4th

Posted by BrooklynTrain on Sun Jun 10 19:34:55 2018

Last weekend wasn't so bad on Queens Blvd - eastbound trains didn't slow down to "conga line" mode until Woodhaven Blvd. Westbound trains went local but moved at normal pace. This weekend was a disaster - took approx 40 minutes from Queens Plaza to Forest Hills (15 min via local to Roosevelt, then 25 min via express to Forest Hills). Returning it took 25 minutes via local from Forest Hills to Roosevelt, and by then I had had enough and bailed via the #7 train.

The MTA must do several things: List delays of "20 to 30 minutes" along Queens Blvd in the service advisories. It was so bad that most people would have been better off taking the 7 or J trains (followed by a bus) than dealing with the E/F/R. Cross-honoring via LIRR would be really nice as well on weekends with severe delays. What was the huge difference between last weekend and this weekend?

36th/4th southbound is rarely holding the R train over the past week for an arriving N or D, even though the next R train is often 20-25 minutes away. On Thursday at approx 10:15pm, the D just missed the R connection and we had to wait approx 20 minutes for the next one. Last night at approx 11:15pm, the crowded N just missed the R connection by a matter of seconds (this was especially cruel since all N passengers could have taken the R to the shuttle bus at 59th ST). And today at approx 4:50pm, the D just made the R by a matter of seconds; had that D been delayed by 10 seconds, the next R was 25 minutes behind (and no holding lights were given).

Is there a new person controlling the holding lights at 36th/4th? It sounds like the person is "asleep at the wheel".

I have often experienced the same thing. It seems that the Tw/Os at Murphy Tower are often literally asleep at the switch. From what I have seen many NYCT employees are unfamiliar with the nuances of operating procedures and unfortunately the line stupidintendents aren't much, if any, better!

It seems you were hanging out at 36/4 to document all this stuff.

It would have been better to document all this stuff with times and operating car numbers. Then send a snail mail letter to NYCT.

This is my biggest problem with Master Towers. They do save money for management by one TWO being able to control multiple interlockings, or multiple TWO's working in one building, but they are away from the action. If the TWO was still working AT the station, at the CI/95 leaving end, I'm sure he would be throwing on holding lights and making the connections.

The old days are gone, and Murphy Master Tower provides a negative impact of service quality to the passengers. Sad.

Bill, I think its like that with all Master Towers now. They not only have to watch over a larger model board and cover more switches but some Master Towers are now responsible for Yard moves.

Every weekend QB is a conga line!

PM rush CTL bound locals start to stack at at Woodhaven and it would be faster to walk from Queens Mall to CTL than take the M or R.

can't believe that shirt is still going on. when your local/express is pulling into the station and you watch as the local/express across the platform pulls away...this is extremely galling. there is no justifiable rationale for that connecting train to not hold.

If the crew on that R train was delayed and it’s their last trip, I’m sure they wouldn’t want to be held by holding lights. They want to finish and go home. Late night and weekend travel will continue to be a hassle until everything is up to par(whenever that will be). The IRT has its share of stuff I deal with every night trying to get home myself. Last night, 4 trains at 10:30 PM were stacked 6 minutes apart. At Fulton, let the first one go and took the following train. Went express from Atlantic to Utica, then heard Next Stop, Pennsylvania Ave. Mind you, home station is Sutter Ave-Rutland Rd. Ended up on the train I let pass at Fulton and missed my connecting bus so had to walk home.

I don't know why they don't list large disruptions in service under "Delays." If a trip is going to be 20-30 minutes late, that's something that people will cause people to seek alternatives.

Pretty much. If transferring to the E or F to continue to Jamaica, it's quicker to backtrack to Roosevelt Ave. But sometimes even they're delayed going into CTL for whatever reason.

There never used to be that problem before the MTA became so circumspect about insisting all trains going into a relay track be fumigated. It wasn’t such a big deal if the occasional passenger failed to get off at Ctl and ended up back on the S/B platform. Also in former days the MTA had more platform C/Rs the make sure that all passengers were off but now its left to the train crew which takes longer.

All it took was a few lawsuits from somebody getting hurt on a relay by trying to walk between cars or getting assaulted by some crazy homeless person still on the train..

Lawsuits are the name of the game now you get hurt on TA property?

They went down in the late 90s with the transfers, bonuses and unlimiteds. In 1998 the base express bus fare actually went down from $4 to $3 and did not return to $4 until 2003.

And in 1996, when the private bus companies raised the fare from $1.25 to $1.50, the off peak fare went down to $1 and remained so until the MTA Bus takeover in 2005-2006.

I haven't the time to read through the entire thread responses - forgive me - but have a question - Sunday night, June 10th, around 9 pm, was on the platform at 71st. & Cont. ave. waiting for an E or F.

I don't remember, but the inbound exp. track may have shown red over red at the platform's west end - which would have meant a city bound exp. train had just left.

An empty R pulled into the local platform and left a few minutes later. A few minutes after that, an E pulled in which I got on, just to get my trip started (I really wanted an F, since I was going to Houston & 2nd).

Per the notices E's & F's were running local to Roosvelt. ave./Qns. Plz. (?). Anyway, the E that I was on, literally crept between stations, until Queens Plaza) - this is Rapid??? Transit? So I know we were following an R, but was the R also following another west bound express then? Were trains backed up at this time? Can someone explain what was going on?

If one can refer me to any one of the previous posts, which covered and explained this it would be greatly appreciated - so no info. would have to be re-posted and/or explained. Thanks!

Interesting, but I wonder, didn't many current employees use the transit system growing up, prior to working for the MTA? Wouldn't they have become aware of procedures from a regular traveler's understanding, or as interested observers, since they applied to work for the MTA, on the road, in the first place?

Not necessarily. The average passenger sees what happens but doesn’t know or understand why. Even many rail buffs are surprisingly clueless about what goes on unless they are fortunate enough to meet with a knowledgable employee who is willing to share his/her knowledge.

Someone was left on a J train that relayed at Broad a couple days ago, seen a man sleeping laid out on the bench on a 4 train relay at Utica. So even current day, passengers do get left behind on relays from time to time.

Unless it has really changed significantly over the years the training leaves a lot to be desired. When I was breaking in as a M/M if I didn’t know the lines from being e rail buff, I would have been in bad shape due to the inadequacy of the training.

CBTC work..
Folks doing the work are on the tracks.
Trains must operate at slower speed for safety.

Exactly, it is strategically poor to spend the meager crew resources to mitigate delays when taking the delay and then adjusting to resycnhronize with the schedule is just as effective from a customer perspective, since the public doesn't care if crews are one-behind.

Then you have the Board crews to fill in for sick calls, 12-9s, etc.

Why is it that they insist on running 3 services knowing that it increases the delays?

They should also note on their page how long the delays add to the trip.
