Tower closing at stations

Posted by jailhousedoc on Mon May 21 07:56:45 2018

I see that many of the switch towers at places like Kew Gardens / Union Turnpike, 71 - Continental Ave and others are being closed up - windows bricked closed, equipment moved out - they are being decommissioned. Are switching operations for the entire system being centralized in one location ? If some terrible thing should happen to that one place, what then ?

Kings Kwy on the Culver is getting a box on stilts above the south end of the platforms. I assume the old tower that the Museum train can hit its guard lights on will be torn down once that is complete.

Since K/Hwy tower was mentioned, does anyone know the history of the interlocking machine in the tower? While the present machine is a typical IND style steel cabinet GRS Model 5 with the standard IND style model board, I’m pretty sure that the original BMT machine was an older wooden cabinet GRS Model 2 with the standard BMT style printed model board. Now it would seem to me that if a completely new machine were to be installed, it would have been an NX machine since the Ditmas Av interlocking is (or was) controlled by an NX machine located in the old Church Ave tower and the earlier towers at Euclid and 179 St were also NX. My question therefore is why was an out of date machine installed at a time when more state of the art equipment was available?

The switches at Ditmas Avenue interlocking. The push button machine from inside there was later moved into the IND Church Avenue Tower, next to the US&S machine that was already in there.

The history of all the towers on the Culver Line seems a bit fuzzy. I mentioned trying to find info about the original interlocking machine in K/Hwy tower but haven’t been able to find any info. Thee is or at least was a closed tower at the S/E of Ave X station which probably would have been the original Tower C but I have heard that no machine was ever installed there. As for the tower at Ditmas, I have no info on that either although I suspect it might have been built to control the switches at Ditmas and 18 Ave prior to the actual completion of the connection probably sometime immediately following unification. However, by the time the connection was actually completed the state of the art of signaling was such that the switches were able to be controlled from the small NX machine installed in Church Ave tower instead.

That was Memorial Day 1980. There was a special Nostalgia Special, IIRC started out at 57th St & 6th using R-1/9's. Then to the Transit Museum for a bit, then the (F) Culver line to 18th Ave. At 18th Ave we changed to the BU's to Coney Island.

The R-38's acted as "horses" with the BU's sandwiched in between the R-38's.

Are you sure that the machine at Church Ave was ever in that structure? It really wouldn’t have made any sense to have a separate structure that required additional personnel when the setup allowing the regular Church Ave Tw/M to operate the machine would have been more cost efficient.
