Re: Expansion of single track Empire Connection to double track?

The folly is that they don't do it at other stops.

Why? How many people do you think actually have to be returned because they can't make it through the border? Has any southbound train been standing room only because of all the rejectees?

Every trip I taken to Montreal, which is about a half dozen over the last 4 years, 1 to 3 people get pulled off at LaColle and did not make it to Montreal. on that train. Every one of them got on at NYPS and went though "Passport check". It is because of other issues.

My point is that if you have a reason to perform that type of check (don't know and don't care) it is senseless not to do it at all stops..If there is a reason, do it all the way, if not don't bother...

So you didn't mean to say "folly," you meant to say "inconsistency."

I would agree with that.

The reason might be that they already have someone hanging around at NYP and Albany doing lots of random stuff and they can give that person one more task, while at Yonkers or Croton they'd need to actually hire an additional person.

Canada has some very rigid policies for people entering into their country. If you have any criminal tecord, including a DWI, they will not let you enter Canada. Of course, if you are an undocumented Muslim from Syria, well then the gates are wide open.

I think with the Amtrak work taking tracks out of service, seeing LIRR on 12 was more likely than normal.

The document check does nothing to say whether or not you will be admitted, that decision is up to Canadian border agents. I have a passport and an enhanced drivers license, either one is WHTI compliant, if I commit an offense that Canada considers a reason not to admit me, nothing on my divers license or passport would indicate that. I can still get on a train.

True, until you got to the part about "Undocumented Muslim from Syria" There is a triple vetting process, and that is NOT done on the train at the border.

Nice try though. You just wanted to get in that crack.

How are you going to do it at all stops when only a few of them are staffed (Rhinecliff thru Saratago) ?

They are not going to hire anyone. Amtrak is shutting down ticket agents all over the country by attrition.

It doesn't stop you from leaving and being denied entry at the border......I have been on a cruise where a couple of passengers were told they can not leave the ship per Canadian authorities....Didn't stop them from getting on....or back off in NY where we originated...

Don't assume they do much homework before the train gets there, even if they were faxed the manifest. They spend a lot of time questioning people. About 1 in 10 people get taken to the dinette car for interviews. Working the whole train takes about 40 minutes. Then they'll spend another hour questioning a handful of people. They tend to linger on people sitting in the end bulkhead coach seats.

En route to Toronto, we were all asked to leave the train and lined up in a building where our "papers" were reviewed. 3 or 4 were pulled out for questioning. Their selection seemed to be predetermined.

Because of the getting off of the Maple Leaf at the border in each direction has surpressed ridership, the process takes longer on the Adirondack. I usually encounter about 140 people on the train at the border.

Reading VIA Rail's annual report, ridership on the Canadian side of the Maple Leaf averages 43 per train. It is the financially the weakest performing train in the entire VIA Rail system, even worse than the 1 coach Quebec remote trains (I have been on that too).

Your 3 or 4 against 43 is pretty well in line with the 1 in 10 I said are pulled to the Adirondack's dinette car.

We flew to Calgary from NY about seven years ago on an Air Canada flight which was about 75% Canadian citizens. We of course got on the non citizens line which was very short and figured it would be a quick process.

The agent questioned us wanting to know our detailed itinerary for our planed 10 day vacation. He asked where we were staying wanting to know every detail of our plans. I felt like saying we were coming as tourists and would help there economy by bringing our tourist dollars there, which of course I did not say. Needless to say he did not make us feel welcome.
