It matters very little how much the RR chooses to pay the exec, provide the pay is for performance rather than the buddy system. An effective CEO is not spending that xx million on 12 houses and 17 cars like a celebutard, it just gets invested back into the economy. Some people to work, some are talented, and some are in a position that fits their talents. Hit all 3 at once and you have a very useful individual.When a CEO does live like a rock star, the company is probably not being managed well. Compare Mulally at Ford vs the clock-punchers at GM and Chrysler. When the other 2 were dithering, Mulally sold off everything that wasn't an essential Ford property, including Ford, including glamour brands Volvo, Aston Martin and Jaguar. He then established lines of credit backed by mortgages on everything in the house, so that Ford would have cash for the crisis he saw coming. The other 2? Notmyjobnotmyproblemitstheeconomygimmeemomoney. A bad CEO destroys massively, a good one can build or save massively. Mullally was worth billions as he prevented Ford from going bankrupt and the resulting bailout scheme theft from people who invested their savings in "safe" GM bonds and who has "safe" pensions at GM suppliers who went down with that Titanic. Ford, by contrast, PAID all those who made stuff for them, and all who had invested in Ford then are better off now rather than being cleaned out. Mulally wasn't paid billions, of course, but whatever he was paid was far less than the difference he made. In my humble opinion, he's worth more than someone who is paid to throw a ball with great accuracy, stand on a stage with style, or skillfully impersonate an imaginary character. Those people get paid more than the typical CEO. |

I’ve been going down there in 1962 and it has always been a concrete wall. As I have mentioned in several posts on this topic, the odd aspect of that concrete wall is that it is not straight across but zigzags slightly between A3 and A1 tk so that the S/B lcl tk A1 is a bit shorter than the other 3 tks. It’s so much shorter that a full 600 ft train cannot be stored there without fouling the switch between A1 and K1. When I first went to the area in 1962, there were no cinderblock walls at al but A7 and A8 yd leads ended in mounds of earth from roadbed to tunnel roof. I can’t recall if I ever went there between 1962 and 1983 when I became a trainmaster but when I went there in 1983, the cinder block wall was in place at the end of A7 and A8. To be more accurate, there are actually 2 separate cinder block walls at the ends of A7 and A8 since the tunnels for the 2 tracks start to separate about the point where they end. Also there were at one time 2 mounds of earth with grass growing on them in the median of Conduit Blvd at what I was told is the approximate place where the tunnels for A7 and A8 supposedly end. They were there as late as 1963 and I can’t recall having been there since then so I don’t know if they are still there or whether they have been leveled off at some point. When I first went there in 1963, there was rail in those tunnels and there were working home signal even though the switches had been removed a few years earlier. I had heard that yard moves from Pitkin Yd were made into those tks and it is possible that the tracks at one time went a bit farther than the mounds of earth at the end of track since the rail continued past the earth and there were no bumping blocks. |
