???

Where? You always actually have to turn your head to the left to make sure there isn't a car directly next to you.

that narrow twisty strip of crap is reallly sscarry to us westerners.

In contrast, it's probably one of the most fun highways to drive on in the NYC area. Designwise, it's not too far off early era Autobahns in Germany, and I've felt rather comfortable driving on it at 85-90 mph. Mind you, I drive a Mazda...

Seeing a slice of your own car in the mirror is comforting, but it means you're missing a slice to the side, and that slice is often the one you need to see for a lane change. Mirrors are an aero drag, so they're just big enough and not more.

You don't need to see your own car in the mirror, because if you're driving it, your car is most certainly there. Instead, adjust the side mirrors so that they view an area starting about a foot outside your car. U can test this out in a parking lot to get comfortable.
If there's something 8 inches from your side, less than 2 feet wide and that sneaks up without showing otherwise, you're being tracked by a flying ninja assassin and are scr-wed anyway.

Those are the "old" rules. The "new" ones are as others have said, wide side mirrors.

That said, if you have either of:
1. Secondary blind spot mirrors, or automatic detection (that little yellow light that comes on when a car is in the blind spot)
2. No rear view (e.g. tall passengers/cargo in back, or a van)

the old rules (see a tiny bit of the vehicle) are still the way to go.

But if you have wide side mirrors, which I agree are very beneficial, shouldn't you still just see a tiny bit of your car to make sure your mirror isn't maladjusted?

LION adjusts mirror to see who is next to him
I have found that I can see the guy behind me in the rearview, and then before he is lost in that mirror, he is in the side mirror.

You need to know EXACTLY who is hiding behind your B post at all times.

It only takes a slight movement of your head to see everything that is behind you in the side view, much better than trying to turn around every time you want to change lanes.

All true, but based on what I know about people and the frequency of accidents, I get the sense that this logic is not always flowing through the driver who needs to break, or else the driver is not fully aware of the situation. I am not good at spotting drivers to note if they are distracted. . .I'm only focused on vehicle and vehicle position/behavior while I'm driving, and while I will make moves that require drivers to break lightly to avert a collision, I don't think I can be as aggressive as most.

Experience is no substitute for knowledge, and you have shown yourself to be devoid of the latter.

I haven’t driven a car without auto-headlights since 2007, so I almost never turn the headlights on or off, but when I do turn them off, one way I notice them off (since it’s not a habit like it used to be), is that the instrument panel is unusually bright. This has been true in rented cars and borrowed cars also. So it’s quite clear that you were wrong about instrument panels being unreadable when the headlights are off.

No wonder R2D2 thinks you’re bingbong.

You have to compare the views between your main mirror and the wing mirrors to ensure that from left to right, it portrays a complete picture. It would be a bad idea to adjust the mirrors in an empty parking lot or one filled with identical cars.

Ah. My car isn't in a totally safe place when I am not driving it. So it is possible (and sometimes happens) that my mirrors have been readjusted in my absence. Since I don't want a mirror adjusting ritual each time I get into the car, I'd rather stick with a system that I know is OK.
