Posted by Allan on Wed Dec 6 12:50:13 2017 Is there a plan somewhere to go CBTC on QB at some point in time?I ask because I see transponders installed at various spots (a lot of them on the NB express track at Roosevelt). |

From what I have heard, the 3 CBTC systems aren't even supposed to be compatible with each other which makes little sense, but then it IS the MTA! Although CBTC is supposed to mean Communication Based Train Control, due to the various shutdowns that have been and will be taking place, the initials are taking on new meanings: Catch Bus To Canarsie, Catch Bus To Corona, and now Catch Bus To Continental. |

The MTA chose to leapfrog that technology and take the plunge into CBTC. There is noise in WMATAland about dumping coded track circuits signaling and train control for CBTC to increase TPH. Never mind the fact that WMATA barely has enough rolling stock to fill the peak time sheets they run today. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

The 7 line CBTC supplied by Thales doesn’t need to be comparable with other CBTC systems unless servic from Hudson Yards to Astoria is in the works. Also, Siemens recently installed CBTC equipment on the Prospect Park IND line so that the TA can test systems from other vendors so they can make their different systems comptable. |

The problem with the Flushing Line’s CBTC not being compatible with anything else is that Flushing Line cars are maintained at CIYd as are the L Line's equipment so the rest of the system has to be compatible with the systems used on those lines. |

From what I understand, auxiliary wayside signals have been removed from the 14 St line except for the portion between Bway Jct and Canarsie which is used by non CBTC trains off the J Line that need to use the car wash. Eventually, there will be no auxiliary wayside signals at all once CBTC is fully implemented system wide. |

Something is wrong when people cannot function at all with technology that once did not exist. Today, if the electricity goes out in a store or bank or office, it will probably close, even though all of those facilities could once function quite nicely without it. I am not sure that such a condition is progress. |

You're ignoring the fact that the vast majority of the time, a modern, computerized office is far more efficient. Since a blackout is a rare event, it doesn't make sense to do things with pens, paper and mechanical typewriters just to continue to function for something that's only going to happen every few years. |

The most effective emergency item for an office to invest in would be a generator.My building's heat didn't work in the post-Sandy blackout, though the hot water did. It would have been nice to have had a boiler with a pure gas pilot, but the cost would have been higher risk of CO poisoning over the years. |
