I had dinner at a local restaurant a few hours after the 2003 blackout started (still daylight though, since that was in August and started at about 3 PM).

Most Catholic churches have offering candles - the ones in racks where you put coins in to light one for a prayer - that are electronic.

That's why I said "not really." Religious services and the like are acceptable uses of candles. But not as primary illumination.

But when the computers fail, business should still be possible. Today, it generally isn't. Everyone just gives up and goes home. Everyone should be trained to function in the absence of technology whenever possible. The idea that one cannot buy a carton of milk if the electronic cash register or bar code scanner is unavailable is absurd.

The new pastor at our parish banished the electric candles and brought back wax, which actually is still required in Catholic churches, regardless of what one may or may not see.

Tell that to the people in Puerto Rico, many of whom are probably still without electricity. Technology is great, but there has to be a backup plan. I used to think that technology was even greater than great, but having worked in IT for 18 years now and having seen its dark side, cash and even gold coins start to look attractive. All our digital wealth can be wiped out by fiat if times change for the worse.

Instead of formulating a backup plan for how to suffer after a disaster, they should have developed a more robust electric grid that could be restored after a massive failure.

For some reason, Durgin-Park had never disconnected their gas lights, at the time of the 1965 blackout. They turned them on and continued serving supper. There was a photo in either the Herald or Globe, for their first edition.

I haven’t seen any regular wax candles in a church for years except possibly for St John’s Capuchin Church around 31 St off 7 Av in Manhattan. I remember back when I first started college in 1962, one of my classmates told me that the pastor in her church had just installed electric candles. They would stay lit for 1 hour for a dime and 3 hours for a quarter. Now most churches seem to have them except for the one I mentioned and since I haven't
been there in years even that church might have gone modern.

Beeswax candles are still required for the actual celebration of Mass in the Catholic Church. Whether they are required for the memorial candles, I don’t know but probably not since the use of the electric ones is so widespread.

both actions are necessary. BTWthere was a very interesting incident 2 years ago (if I have the timing correct) of very well planned and executed sabotage of an electrical substation some in sillicon Valley involving marksmanship with high powered rifle(s?) which surfaced in wire stories only a couple months after the occurence. Followups not seen.
And, if I may, the more distributed the generation the les grid vulnerability (mechanical or criminal) matters.

I agree. When I retired from the schedule office in 1997, all schedules and work programs were done by computer. I believe that at the time I retired, I was the only remaining schedule manager (schedule maker) who could make a timetable and work program by hand without any computer aid whatsoever!

I would think there has been some regression in the last 20 years.

Mexico, Venezuela, Hungary, Russia, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Syria, Bangladesh, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, China (worse in some respects, better in others), North Korea.

Vs. Iraq, Libya (hard to compare), Serbia, what else.

You'd have to include economic advances at the cost of political freedom (e.g., India, China) or danger (Mexico, South Africa, Libya).

You can search for LED lights (albeit older ones) that can last much longer than 12 hours. They just won't be very bright.

Candles aren't very bright either.

I've never seen anything advertised as a very long-life battery-powered light. They usually advertise brightness.

Early white LED lights did have very long battery lives, since those LEDs by nature couldn't put out much light without overdriving them and thus severely shortening their lifespans. Once stronger LEDs came out and LED lights became commoditized, brightness became the advertising pitch, esp. if they wanted to compete against incandescents. What you need to look for are lights with multiple "brightness modes" or some such, because they would typically advertise a "very bright" mode but also have a lower light, long-lasting mode. However, you may have to pay quite a bit more than your standard, off-the-shelf light from the store.

True, although some jurisdictions are thinking of outlawing plastic bags entirely and having stores return to paper which is more easily recyclable.

Yep, I too pay mostly with plastic these days. However I have a few C notes stashed under my mattress in the event of the "unexpected" as in a wide spread power failure rendering ATM's & card readers useless. Other concerns would be a successful computer hack that would incapacitate banking & access to funds.
Its the unexpected, something that never should happen, happens when cash comes in real handy. Nobody (in cases like these) will refuse cash.

Yeah most wayside signals are gone from the 14th st line besides the area between Broadway Jct and Linden Yard. Having done a pick or two in work trains I can tell you there'w a absolutely no automatics between Broadway Jct and Myrtle. Then from Myrtle to Bedford Ave. When a Work Train or non CBTC train goes through RCC shuts it off and hold L trains in stations outside of the blocks.

Stores in CA now required to charge 10 cents per bag if they supply them. They are usually the reusable ones, so if you remember to bring a few with you when you return to the store, you don't get charged.

The only thing I don’t like about that is that many times people don't necessarily expect to go shopping but on the way home from work, they might decide they need something and go to the local super market to pickup a few items and they may not have a plastic carry bag with them. That type of policy requires a person to carry a bag or 2 around 24/7 which is an unfair burden on the average person. There is no reason why people who do comply with the law should have to pay for the carelessness of those who don’t!!!

Exactly my point. The MTA should settle on one type of CBTC signaling for the entire system and then install it. It should also be made upgradeable so that improvements can be installed as needed much like upgrading computer operating systems on home PCs and MACs.
