Guess you had to like trolleys to buy one of those homes right up against the private ROW. Did anyone ever build over the PROW section near 85 Street & 18th Avenue?

It may not have been a like for trolleys so much as the affordability of the house. If you wanted a home badly enough, then you would buy there if it was all you could afford.

Pictured here is the Lincoln Ave sta on the Flushing Line taken in the late 30s. That Apt house south wall behind the station is about 20 ft from the structure. Talk about enduring noise & vibrations, espicially when the expresses zipped by. I wonder how much lower the rent was on apts facing the el.

I grew up near the McDonald Avenue el. Two old-timer neighbors were kids when the el was built and remembered the pre-elevated days. McDonald Ave (then Gravesend Ave) was a nice street of homes and small shops with apartments above. The el almost immediately turned it into an undesirable location.

Culver trains ran at grade for 40 years before the El was built. It had very little ambiance before or after the El was built.

But the "unique" thing in the pic here is the EL was there about 10-15 years before the apartment house was built. I'v never seen or heard about a multiple dwelling housing unit built so close to an existing El. I've walked along there many times (back & forth to the old Sunnyside Movie house) & they have terraces facing the side of the platform. I guess folks threshold of annoyance was different back then.

It may have been nicer before the el, but it was a very busy railroad street with steam trains and freight and trolleys, in some years all at the same time.
