Amazing how they used to rebuild the system in those days.

Just imagine that still being there, rebuilt for cars like the R12 and later, but now with NTTs.

It’s interesting that the express station at 42/2 was built as a conventional single level 2 island platform station instead of a 2 level station like the ones on 3 Ave.

When the 1939 World's Fair closed on 10/27/1940, ridership on the remaining part of the 2nd Ave el, from Queens to Chatham Square plunged, except for rush hours. After 5/19/1941, all Mom-Sat service from about 9:30PM-12:30AM and all Sunday service ended. Although construction supplies were limited by WWII, LaGuardia's developer friends finally persuaded him and the City to shut it down. Their propaganda was that the steel from the el would be better served for the War effort. They got their wish on 6/13/1942, when it closed down.

Propaganda indeed. There was no other source of steel? I have never been a fan of sacrificing the long term in pursuit of the short term, and this is an example of horrible myopia.

Now they shut the Jamaica el down on weekends so they can park a work train someplace and dick around with 2 stations on one side.

I'm amazed they made investments in this line when it had only 14 years left to live...

Apparently, investing in dying lines wasn't all that uncommon. The LIRR Rockaway line was elevated only about 20 years before its demise, and so were the abandoned portions of the Staten Island Railway.

My guess is that, with the 2nd Ave el gone, their property holdings would increase in value. The developers went so far as to make sure that the City Council's Brooklyn members, who usually voted along the same lines as their Queens counterparts, voted to take down the el. The Queens politicians were thrown under the bus! I don't know the details about who got to Laguardia, who wanted the lower 2nd Ave el kept, until work would begin on the lower part of the SAS.

But I'm sure at the time they did not foresee it closing in 14 years time.

LIRR thought since way before WWII that they would eventually palm off the RBB to the subway system. It was Robert Moses who saw to it that the Liberty Ave - White Pot Park segment got abandoned.

there actually is a serious market for steel these days that was made before 1945, to use in machines that have to be radiation sensitive. Everything made since has been sufficiently irradiated through the increase of general background radiation from the testing of atomic weapons that the reading would be off.

If I recall from reading my NYCTS history, the third tracking of the 2 Av El was done a lot earlier than 1928, more like 1915. Why there seems to be a bumping block made of crossties on the exp tk, I don’t know.

Agreed. This is well after the 3rd track was installed. Note the red flag on the express track, it looks like they are simply doing maintenance.

The loss of the North Shore and South Beach portions of SIR saddens me greatly. I think the Robin Road trestle is STILL hanging on, by the way.
