When the 1939 World's Fair closed on 10/27/1940, ridership on the remaining part of the 2nd Ave el, from Queens to Chatham Square plunged, except for rush hours. After 5/19/1941, all Mom-Sat service from about 9:30PM-12:30AM and all Sunday service ended. Although construction supplies were limited by WWII, LaGuardia's developer friends finally persuaded him and the City to shut it down. Their propaganda was that the steel from the el would be better served for the War effort. They got their wish on 6/13/1942, when it closed down. |
