Transit Museum Encourages Darius McCollum Activities

Posted by BusMgr on Sun Oct 15 14:44:10 2017

The New York Transit Museum recently e-mailed its members an advertisement for Halloween costumes that are being sold at its museum store. One is an NYCT Track Worker Costumer, the description of which encourages individuals to "[k]eep the subways running with this authentic NYCT track worker costume!" Another is a Metro-North Train Engineer Costume, the description of which states that "[e]very kid wants to drive a train, and now you can!"

It seems a bit hypocritical for the MTA transit agencies to express outrage over the antics of Darius McCollum when they, themselves, are encouraging kids to keep the subways running by wearing the uniform of, and pretending to be, a track worker, and to tell kids that they can actually "drive" a train themselves by wearing an engineer's uniform, both of which being made available and sold by the museum.

The description of the track worker costume should probably say "authentic-looking" rather than "authentic". I'm sure it is distinguishable from the real employee garb, and not just by the size. Other than that one quibble, I see no problems with this gear. It's obviously not meant to encourage kids to actually try to drive trains or to work on actual tracks. Lots of kids pretend they are driving the trains; I know I used to. I even used to pull up on (not rotate) the handle of the actual hand brake when pretending to stop the train. (One time I did turn it exactly one notch of the gear. Luckily, there was someone knowledgeable sitting there who warned me not to do that, and why. I never did that again.)

This Transit Museum promotion seems to be geared towards little kids. The link says ages 3-6, kids aged 3-6 are not stealing trains and buses, they can't even ride the system without an Adult! This promotion is harmless IMO.

It's really not that big of a deal. Let kids play pretend. I don't think 6-year old Charlie is going to be inspired to go steal a train by dressing up as a track worker when he goes out to trick-or-treat this year. Really.

You sound like a 40-year old WASP mother protesting against video games.

LOL. Superman/Supergirl costumes don't inspire kids to jump off buildings, fireman costumes don't cause them to run into burning buildings, etc... I'm pretty sure these are safe.

The engineer costume should come with an extra large coffee and a stack of time slips, not whatever those tools are.

You a stretching things a bit. There is nothing wrong in letting kids live out their fantasies.
