East New York Loop Service? |
|
Posted by ModelRider on Tue Aug 15 13:40:58 2017 Anyone know what the service pattern was while the East New York Loop was in service from 1900 to 1904?The Brooklyn Eagle articles from the period only describe Fulton El trains running to Cypress Hills and a shuttle running between Manhattan Junction and Grant Ave. Did any service actually loop around the loop? |

I don't know the answer, but did the the old Fulton el, not to be confused with the Fulton Street portion of the current Broadway-Jamaica el, actually touch out by Crescent Street ? |

One controversial one was from Broadway Ferry to Fulton Ferry or Park Row via the Loop, running during off hours. The reason it was controversial was because the BRT used it as an excuse to run only shuttles to Cypress Hills. IIRC the Public Service Commission put an end to that. The Loop (from 1906) was the way Broadway-Brooklyn trains reached Canarsie. And the loop was in service much longer than 1904, until the current configuration of Broadway Junction 1919/1920 (but not the 14th Street Line part, obviously). |

Here's a map:The trains made a U-turn over Van Sinderen Ave (then Vesta Ave). The shuttle service from there further east was unpopular and was soon replaced with both the loop and through service. |

Thanks for the info.Other sites describe that the loop handled all El service, but it doesn't make sense that any one terminal could handle service from Broadway, Lexington, Myrtle, as well as Brighton trains (double that if they all looped back to Park Row). This makes more sense. So what I can piece together is that during peak service times, the Els ran the full route length. During off peak times, Fulton Line trains would use the loop to either Broadway Line or Lexington Line. A shuttle would run from the City Line (Grant Ave) and loop around to Cypress Hills. I'd have to assume that Broadway Line trains always ran the full route, since some were still running to Far Rockaway via the LIRR. |

The view is looking west. The elevated portion of the loop is above and it was also a trolley loop as you can see in the foreground.I call this picture "Church of the Holy BRT." |
