Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Mon May 22 09:33:56 2017 Tuscarora Almanac – May 22, 1907 – The Book of First Runs Upper Darby, Pennsylvania Philadelphia & Western Railroad The Philadelphia and Western Railroad begins electric interurban service between the 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby and Strafford, Pennsylvania. In 1911 it was extended half a mile to the PRR Strafford Station. A branch line from Villanova Junction to Norristown opened in 1912 and quickly became the main line. The section between Villanova and Strafford was abandoned on March 23, 1956. Source: “Red Arrow Lines in Color” (Morning Sun Books / 2014) by Mr. Douglas E. Peters Tuscarora Almanac - May 22, 1967 - The Book of Wrecks Manhattan, New York New York Central Railroad There was a head - on collision on the West Side Line of the New York Central Railroad in the vicinity of West 147 Street. Eastbound freight NY-4 out of Syracuse collided with westbound freight ND-5. The crash resulted in the death of five railroad employees and the destruction of six engines and eleven cars. The engines on NY-4 were RS-32 2020, GP-35 2384 and U30B 2835. The engines on ND-5 were RS-3 5305, FA 1064, FB 3333 and 3359. Source: Trackside around the Big Apple 1964-1973 with Al Roberts. Tuscarora Almanac - May 22, 1975 - The Book of Wrecks New York City Transit Authority BMT Division There was a collision today on the center track of the Astoria Line near 30th Avenue (Grand Avenue) Station.R-30s 8507 and 8545 were badly damaged. The car bodies were reportedly transported by truck to the Corona Yard. (They must have been removed from the el by crane.) The damaged end of 8507 was cut off and transported to the Coney Island Yard. R-30 8507 was later scrapped but 8545 returned to service around June of 1977. (Does anyone have more detail? This one sounds very interesting.) Tuscarora Almanac - May 22, 1991 - The Book of Last Runs New York City Transit Authority All Divisions The New York City Transit Authority discontinues the use of marker lights today. All cars which still have marker lights will now display Red-Red aspects on the front and rear of the train. Source: New York Division Bulletin / June 1991 Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Between 30th Ave and Astoria Blvd. there is a hill and a sweeping right turn. I would think 8507 came upon 8545 too fast and couldn't stop. At that time the middle track was pretty much unsignaled to my recollection. By the time I became a train operator in 1981, they installed a signal there which you must key by by pushing a lever. Now with the new signals there are homesignals all over.I am surprised no pics ever surfaced of those cars temporarily housed at Corona Yard. |

The NY Daily News had a front page pic of the Astoria crash. One car looked like it was hit across the front with a giant bar, and what little could be seen of the other was shredded metal. |

Re: marker lightsJust before the retirement of the redbirds, I noticed at least one train that did not follow that rule. :-) Re: NY Central crash How fast were those trains going to cause that kind of death and destruction? |

The lenses we're colored red, green and yellow. Sometimes the red lens was missing, therefore you saw white. |

I could have sworn marker lights held out until very nearly the bitter end, like 1999 or 2000. |

After the official use of marker lights was stopped, there was a dewatering project on Lenox Ave that caused a unique reroute of #2 trains via Lex against the direction of traffic in peak periods. In the AMs, all S/B 2s ran normally via Lenox and 7 Av and N/B trains ran via Lex. around noon, the service was reversed and N/B 2s ran via 7 Av and Lenox and S/B 2s ran via Lex. Since the color coding for 7 Av was red and lex was green, the District Gen Supt issued a bulletin that 2s operating via Lex would carry 2 green markers and 2s operating via 7 Av would remain with the red markers. It could have been during that operation that you observed other than red/red markers. |
