What Was This Building on This Empty Lot on Franklin Ave About a Block From Empire Blvd? |

Posted by heypaul on Sat May 20 20:50:40 2017 I was riding down Franklin Ave when I saw this building which made me think it was a station entrance to an eliminated station on the Franklin Shuttle. I didn't have a camera but just managed to cough up this on Google street view.What is this? |

It was probably part of the large Consumers Park Brewery complex. There was a shuttle station near that location, although I'm not sure this was an actual entrance. You can still see at least two large former brewery buildings just north of there. |

It does! Whenever I operated the shuttle between Prospect Pk and Botanical Gardens and pass a certsin area would get the distinct smell of cinnamon. So that's what it is. |

I don't think that little beige building was connected with the subway/BRT/BMT or the brewery at all. It looks too modern. Additionally, there's a curb cut for a driveway right behind the red parked car.I think the building may have been a service shed for the apartment building (which looks much older)- a place for the building super to store salt and other supplies. They probably stopped using it when too much stuff got stolen. Funny thing is, my job took me out there in April 2008- I spotted the brewery right away. I did not notice that little structure. |

Ok, heypaul's second picture shows a concrete vehicular driveway lined up with the curb cut I mentioned before. And playing around with street view, from the other side, facing the apartment building, the little building is clearly made of cinder blocks skimmed with concrete.Definitely not a 1901 structure. But as it faces the empty lot and brewery, I'm taking back my above thought that it was ever connected with the apartment building (which also has its own service alley). Truthfully, it kinda looks like a concession store- like where you'd buy hot dogs at a minor league park or get mini-golf balls. Was that grassy lot, once inhabited by the ice plant ever used for such a purpose? It doesn't look big enough... |

Some of the accounts said that passengers, seeing the train's progress, asked the guards to ring for the stop, but it was too late.The name of Consumers Park was changed by 1920 IIRC, but it wasn't replaced for a decade. |

I don't think it was a concession store, the windows seem to be wrong for it. It's probably not an old row house either, unless it was heavily modified later - the upper and lower doors means that it was affiliated with the ice plant lot. Perhaps it was a makeshift office of some kind? |

I just did all of this. Very interesting. I looked at the 1924, 1951, 1996, and 2006 aerial images, as well as ACRIS and the "Building Profile". From what I can see:1) The building we're speaking of, as well as the old brewery itself, have been owned by an "HPG Associates Inc" since 1983. No idea who they are, or from whom they acquired the property. 2) The 1924 image shows a grouping of smallish, industrial buildings there 3) The 1951 image shows a more modern, unitary industrial-looking building there Neither clearly shows the small, cinderblock structure we're speaking of here. I can't tell if that's because the resolution wasn't good enough (especially in 1951..) to show it, or because it wasn't built 4) The 1996 image gives the impression that the larger building visible in 1951 was freshly demolished. 5) 2006 Looks pretty much as it does today- a well-trimmed, grassy lot. I know that DoIT site says that all of these structures were build in 1920. But DoIT is often wrong by a few years- especially regarding properties built before 1938, when the Buildings Dept had a fire that destroyed many records, including Certificates of Occupancy (this building has no C/O) In fact, my own home, built in 1968 (I have the C/O), shows up in DoIT as built in 1970. This is far less than the discrepancy related to the brewery, which we know was built in 1901, but is listed as built in 1970. Accordingly, it's my guess that the little building we're talking about was connected with the larger structure visible in 1951: a) It's built of cinder block, and is a bit too "blocklike" to strike me as pre-WW1 or even pre WW2 construction b) It has a vehicular driveway, with an iron curb cut in the sidewalk. Definitely used in the era of motorized trucks. c) DoIT estimated as built in 1920 because they don't have records, and that's the guess they made for the extant brewery building. I don't fault them. c) Not now, and never was part of the BRT/BMT/BoT/NYCTA system. |

Ok, a quick look at historic aerials has given us the answer- finally!!First of all, my own long analysis of yesterday afternoon was a bit off. There was no large, unitary industrial building where the ice plant was. It must've been the poor resolution of DoIT's 1951 image that made me think so. Historic aerials.com shows a vacant lot there as far back as 1954. But their 1966 image shows a large parking lot. So I guess this building was the cashier and management office of said lot. I stand by my theory as to why DoIT says the small building and the brewery were built in 1920: do their own spotty records from the pre-WW2, and especially pre-WW1 eras, 1920 is their best guess- for which I do not fault them. They also show a lot of old houses in Flushing as having been built in 1920, when they are obviously older. |
