Tuscarora Almanac - May 20, 1970 - The Book of Wrecks

New York City Transit Authority
IND Division

There was a major collision on the IND Queens Line today between two "GG" trains just of Roosevelt Avenue Station. The 7:13 AM departure from Forest Hills experienced brake problems at Woodhaven Boulevard. The passengers were discharged and the first two cars of the train were "cut-out". The motorman then proceeded to operate the train from the third car relying on hand signals from the conductor in the first car. Follow "EE" and "GG" trains were routed to the express track on leaving Forest Hills and back to the local tracks west of Roosevelt Avenue. The 7:33 AM "GG" was in the process of switching back to the local track when it was struck by the deadheading train. Due to the fact that the 713 had the brake cut out on the first two cars the trip cocks on the interlocking signals failed to stop it. The crash resulted in two fatalities and nearly eighty injured. These were in first passenger fatalities on the transit system in over forty years.

The consist of the 713 was (s) 4501-00, 4043-42, 3992-93, 4548-49. The consist of the 733 was (s) 6344, 6492, 6318, 6469, 6304, 6468, 6315, and 6355. R-16 6304 bore the brunt of the collision and had to be cut up on the spot. R-40M 4501 was also heavily damaged.

Re GG crash: "The motorman then proceeded to operate the train from the third car relying on hand signals from the conductor in the first car. "

How is this even possible? How could the MM see the CR's signals?

Conductor used a flashlight. Since that incident don't think such a practice has been used again.

4501-00, 4043-42, 3992-93, 4548-49 was quite a mixed consist. Wonder if that what caused brake problems ?

I see they thought nothing of mixing GE and WH R16's.

Didn't the R-38s and R-40Ms have the same braking system? (the so-called "Darth Vader" brakes)

The 1970 IND Queens line crash made a list of the worst subway train wrecks in Stan Fischler's 1976 book Uptown, Downtown (which, in their photo pages, misdated the R38 in the caption accompanying a pic of a front end of that second production-model stainless-steel fleet, as being late '50's when they were built in 1966-67, plus very early copies misattributed Budd as builder - later copies, such as I have, corrected the R38 manufacturer in that caption to St. Louis Car).

As for the LIRR color-coding at that outset, what Pantone colors would have been applicable to each branch, and to what extent did it influence the change in color scheme for New York subways after '79?

A brake release sounded a little different. The R38 could sound likea Bronx cheer. R16/R27, R27/R32, R32/R38 and R40/R42 combos were more common.

LIRR started color coding each branch in 1974 after a 3 year hiatus of no timetables. (The prior composite ones looked more like an employee timetable). Harlem/Hudson/New Haven and LIRR schedules were all identical looking, though their styling has since drifted somewhat.

I highly doubt the TA was influenced by that.

I remember seeing R-32/42 lashups on the D. Luckily I never saw the R-10s mixed with anything else, although it was done occasionally.

It continued to be used for a short time after that bit with a subsequent bulletin that specified that in order to have an “other than head car operation” either a M/M instructor, a trainmaster or a T/D who was a former M/M had to be on the train to supervise.

R-38s through 42s had the upgrade of the SMEE braking system known by WABCO as RT-2. As for mixing WH and GE R-16s, on the BMT and the IND it was always common practice to mix WH and GE cars in the same trains but until 1969 all trains were the same car type. The IRT was the first division to assign cars by electrical manufacture which then resulted in different car types in the same train. By 1969, the car problem became so critical that what ever equipment was available was coupled together to make train.

At least the IRT SMEES from the R-17s through the mainline R-36s blended together stylistically. On the IND/BMT, the R-16s blended with the R-27/30s; the R-32s and R-38s blended well and so did the R-40Ms with the R-42s. When you started throwing everything and anything together, you had a Borgaschmord Train.

Although the IRT trains from the 17s through the 36s were basically the same design, once the cars were assigned by electrical manufacture, you started having Borgaschmord trains when R-12s, 14s and 15s were mixed in the various consists.

The R-12s and R-14s stuck out more because of the clerestory roofs. At least the R-15s had turtleback roofs.

Nothing stuck out like a sore thumb more than a pair of slant R-40s thrown into a consist.
