R-38s through 42s had the upgrade of the SMEE braking system known by WABCO as RT-2. As for mixing WH and GE R-16s, on the BMT and the IND it was always common practice to mix WH and GE cars in the same trains but until 1969 all trains were the same car type. The IRT was the first division to assign cars by electrical manufacture which then resulted in different car types in the same train. By 1969, the car problem became so critical that what ever equipment was available was coupled together to make train. |
