If they'd gone with overhead, this wouldn't have happened. I mean, it could very well have been a downed wire incident at the exact same time and place, but it wouldn't have been a third rail fire :).

In that case, perhaps the train would not have been able to make a reverse move.

That does it. Time to convert everything on Metro-North to overhead wires once and for all. Great excuse to build it all the way to Rensselaer so that Amtrak can finally use ACS-64s on the Empire Service trains. Also no fumes in GCT anymore. Metro-North will have to use ALP-45DPs on the Waterbury, Danbury and Wassaic trains though.

You cannot put wires in GCT: The overheads are too low.

and it still would not ave been allowed thru interlocking since after fire the damaged third rail needed repair. so train would still need to back up at restricted speed (15 mph or less) all way back to Woodlawn (about 6 miles)

Like wires are never downed in storms or by tangling with the catenaries.

Actually, wires just might clear in GCT since there either are, or at least were, overhead 3rd rails that were used to pore the electric locos incase that got gapped going over the many slip switches in the terminal area.

Catenary wire will not clear in park avenue tunnel and 12.5 Kv needs about two foot above the train.
the overhead third rail used in GCT and melrose tunnel only needed 2 or 3 inches as it was 660 volt DC

You just might be right. With the height of the NH equiptment with their resister cover humps on top of each car having no problem fitting into GCT, wire might just fit. AS far as the overhead 3d rail used to power engines over long 3d rail track level switch gaps all those years ago, last time I looked, its still there.
Who knows, it might still be energized. The folks I knew that I could have asked have retired too.

all overhead third rail is gone, after E10b's were retired there was no need for it anymore.

Something tells me they may not be, and in fact may have better clearance than in NYP. And tunnel clearances under Park Avenue are (IIRC) almost close to those of the North River Tunnels, and not unfixable if need be.

The kind of storms that down the wires would drown the third rail. Wires and third rail are equal victims of tree limbs or even whole trees in such storms. Advocating 100% dieselization, are you? Third rail is not for high-speed operation, remember; max is about 100 mph.

Besides, there is a wonderful modern invention called the chainsaw. That generally keeps tree limbs from being in places where they could foul a track or wires.

Is this just another expression of your continued hatred of trains, ultimately?
