The kind of storms that down the wires would drown the third rail. Wires and third rail are equal victims of tree limbs or even whole trees in such storms. Advocating 100% dieselization, are you? Third rail is not for high-speed operation, remember; max is about 100 mph.

Besides, there is a wonderful modern invention called the chainsaw. That generally keeps tree limbs from being in places where they could foul a track or wires.

Is this just another expression of your continued hatred of trains, ultimately?
