If this delays until tomorrow they could work with Metro North to do something like have MNRR engines pull them in from Croton Harmon. Right now MNRR needs all their engines and crews for rush hour.

I was thinking they could pull the LSL in from the east side but they decided to cancel the NYC bound one today.

LIRR Cancels Many PM Trains....Re: Possible Collision between Amtrak & NJT Trains

Posted by heypaul on Fri Mar 24 18:08:07 2017, in response to Re: Possible Collision between Amtrak & NJT Trains, posted by r33/r36 mainline on Fri Mar 24 17:18:12 2017.

Press Release March 24, 2017 LIRR IMMEDIATE
LIRR to Cancel 29 PM Rush Hour Trains From Penn Station Resulting From Amtrak Derailment
No Westbound Trains From Jamaica or Woodside; Customers Should Allow Extra Travel Time
Because of an Amtrak derailment at Penn Station this morning, the Long Island Rail Road plans to cancel 29 PM rush hour trains out of the 87 that normally depart from Penn Station during this time. The cancelations are necessary to allow NJTransit and Amtrak the exclusive use of Tracks 13-16, which are normally shared with LIRR; the move means four of the nine Penn Station tracks used by the LIRR for the evening rush hour are not available for use as a result of the derailment.
The remaining LIRR trains from Penn Station could experience delays and crowding.
The LIRR will operate on near normal schedules out of Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn and Jamaica, Woodside and Hunterspoint Avenue, Queens. New York City Transit will cross-honor LIRR tickets at 34th Street-Penn Station on the 1 Subway2 Subway3 Subway and A SubwayC SubwayE Subway.
Westbound Port Washington Branch trains will terminate at Woodside, where customers will be able to transfer to the 7 Subway subway for continued service to Manhattan. On the LIRR’s other branches, there will be no westbound service between Jamaica and Penn Station. Customers will be able to transfer to the E Subway subway for continuing service to Penn Station. Many Channels for Services Updates
The LIRR urges its customers to stay alert for train service updates. The LIRR will continuously update customers in these ways:
Email and text message service updates – Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.
MTA.info – The rail tab of the “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each branch, updated every minute. In addition, customers can visit www.mta.info/lirr to see special service notices in the upper center of the page.
@LIRR on Twitter – Twitter users can follow @LIRR to receive updates of a similar nature to the email and text alerts, shortened to fit Twitter’s format.
LIRR Train Time – Customers who use the LIRR Train Time™ app will see up-to-the-minute status for each upcoming train at each station. As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route.
The above communications channels can be accessed while at home or on the go. For customers who are located at stations, the LIRR will post the latest service updates on digital signs at station platforms and will make audio announcements over public address systems, and on-board announcements made by train crews.

An Amtrak left slightly after 9:30 PM last nite from Track 38. Couldn't see the train because there is a long ramp and personell were checking tickets before you could go down. Lots of smoke down there, diesel engine was in operation. Yeah, violating the rules!

My understanding is that the diesel rule is an MNRR one that can be suspended by management as necessary, rather than imposed by an external authority. That said, the train had *two* engines so it must have left quite an impression!

I'm also guessing that they used the middle tracks in the Park Ave tunnel, as the lack of a front escape hatch prevents them from using the outside tracks (or I may have this backwards).

and in GCT there is no law prohibiting diesel , only a MN agreement for revenue trains, emergencies are excluded, so are non revenue moves.

Then there must have been a change. Years ago the FDNY frowned big time (& enforced it with fines) about running diesels into GCT. At one time, starting when the FL-9s refused to run on electric, fine payments were factored into the budgets to maintain service. Non revenue moves were covered by electric switchers. But that was then.

"Years ago the FDNY frowned..."

Maybe that was when the railroad was privately operated. While I'm sure the FDNY can fine the MTA, as a practical matter the MTA could probably just laugh at such a notion. If it became an issue, the state would probably just pass a law exempting the MTA from FDNY regulations, assuming that such a law does not already exist. In any case, in a pinch, they do what they have to. If diesel engines are the only way to get something necessary done, that's how it will be done.

"In any case, in a pinch, they do what they have to. If diesel engines are the only way to get something necessary done, that's how it will be done."

Absolutely. No argument here. If they could get hit with a fine is different than if they -would-get hit with one. I'm sure the FDNY have bigger fish to fry. Point here is if there is a regulation, it dosen't mean automatically someone will be written up.

However, the bigger issue is the merchants who pay top dollar rent for space in GCT who'd scream big time at the mere hint of diesel fumes.
Hell, they get hysterical if you'd just light up a cigarette.

I know that all too well. The (state owned) building I work at has inadequate fire stairwells for the number of employees inside, but there's no one who can force them to fix the problem. I just got into the habit of immediately running straight for the stairs the moment the alarm sounds, to try and get as far down as possible before the evacuation slows to a crawl.
