Lay Up North of 96/2 |
|
Posted by MainR3664 on Thu Mar 23 16:11:56 2017 Who here has actually seen a train enter or leave the layup area north of 96/2? I went up there today, just to see how much I could see (legally) from the north end of the platform (when my wife and I went in January, she was nervous I'd get arrested for surveillance, so I didn't look too closely). I think I saw a train at the very north end of Track S1.. I was thinking how neat it would be to see the home signals at the north end show anything other than red over red.Just then, a train pulled in on S2, and the signal changed to yellow over green!! They started making announcements that the train was "going to the yard" and no one should try to board; as soon as the doors opened, platform personnel began fumigating...and I thought "wow- I'm really gonna see this!". Then, alas, the T/O emerged and began to walk towards the back of the train, some discussion between train and platform personnel ensued, and they announced the train would in fact, remain in service. So I didn't get to see it moving north. I got out, walked to 72/2, and boarded there- I'd never before seen that station's mezzanine or entrances. I remain amazed at how deep 86th Street is- 72nd isn't nearly as deep. 96th is quite close to the surface, presumably to line up with the 1970s tunnel segment.... |

From a previous message:"I remain amazed at how deep 86th Street is- 72nd isn't nearly as deep. 96th is quite close to the surface, presumably to line up with the 1970s tunnel segment.... " The typography also changes between 96th Street and East Harlem - similar to why the Metro-North railroad emerges from underground. Mike |

The typography also changes between 96th Street and East Harlem - similar to why the Metro-North railroad emerges from underground.Aside from the issue with Helvetica, the drop in elevation on Park occurs mostly from 95th to 1054th. On 2nd Ave, it occurs farther south, from 86th to 96th. 86th and 2nd is 60 feet above sea level, 96th is only 20 feet above sea level. |

What's with the incredibly steep hill on Lexington Ave. between 102nd and 103rd? Yet 3rd Ave. is flat in that area. Park Ave. may have as big or bigger a change in elevation, but distributed over a longer distance, so it's not as steep. That must have been an impressive hill before the land was built up. |

Click on my link and zero in on the area, and you'll see exactly what's going on. Lex attacks the hill head on, while all the other avenues approach it more tangentially. |

The original town on the Shawmut Peninsula was called "Trimonten" (sp?), or "three mountains" - that's why there are so many "Tremont" streets, etc. In the area. Two of the hills were completely leveled, and the third, Beacon Hill, lost about half its hight. The dirt was then used as fill to both create the current shoreline and the Back Bay neighborhood - which had previously been tidal flats.subfan |
