Lay Up North of 96/2

Who here has actually seen a train enter or leave the layup area north of 96/2? I went up there today, just to see how much I could see (legally) from the north end of the platform (when my wife and I went in January, she was nervous I'd get arrested for surveillance, so I didn't look too closely). I think I saw a train at the very north end of Track S1.. I was thinking how neat it would be to see the home signals at the north end show anything other than red over red.

Just then, a train pulled in on S2, and the signal changed to yellow over green!! They started making announcements that the train was "going to the yard" and no one should try to board; as soon as the doors opened, platform personnel began fumigating...and I thought "wow- I'm really gonna see this!". Then, alas, the T/O emerged and began to walk towards the back of the train, some discussion between train and platform personnel ensued, and they announced the train would in fact, remain in service. So I didn't get to see it moving north. I got out, walked to 72/2, and boarded there- I'd never before seen that station's mezzanine or entrances.

I remain amazed at how deep 86th Street is- 72nd isn't nearly as deep. 96th is quite close to the surface, presumably to line up with the 1970s tunnel segment....
