A “new” Broadway Thru-Express” begins operation on Monday, February 9, 1959. It will run during the rush hours in the direction of traffic bypassing 191st Street, 181st Street, 157th Street and 145th Street and then making all local stops. Larry, I remember the 1959 IRT West Side changeover very well. The #1 trains all became the newer R21/22 equipment, eight cars long. The old Low-V equipment on the 137th Street short turn locals was replaced. The new service was dubbed "high speed local service" and was advertised as being time competitive with the old Broadway Express that switched to and from the express track at 96th Street.

Other improvements unveiled on 2/6/59 involved the stations. 10 car local platforms at 86, 79, 66, 59, and 50 Streets were unveiled. Previously, these platforms were only 5 cars long, creating a major capacity constraint. 91st Street was closed. 96th Street was rebuilt and lengthened to 94th Street where a new south mezzanine and fare control opened. The old local platforms at 96th were also closed on that day.

Wikipedia cites the Woodbridge wreck as the third deadliest in US history. Didn't know that.

So the local platforms at 96th St were actually used? I thought that the extra local platforms at the express stops of the original IRT were almost never used.

Even though the local platforms were lengthened to accommodate 10 car trains, the #1 ran only 8 cars for many years after 1959.

Until 2/6/59 local trains opened on both sides at 96th St. The local platform was 5 cars long. A person entering the station went through turnstiles leading to the local platform. Then the person could stay on the local platform or go down and up to access the express platforms, or the opposite local platform if desired.

After 2/6/59 a person still entered the same way, but had to go down and up to access all trains, express or local. The same day, the 94th St. fare control opened so passengers had a second means of access.

The down and up at the 96th St. end remained till a few years ago when the new north end opened at 96th St. with its entrance in the middle of the street, and the stairs on the sidewalks were closed.

Did the conductor stay in the middle and open the doors on just the first four cars at South Ferry? Or was he between the fifth and sixth cars?

How come the #1- Broadway Thru Express was discontinued?

There was a general decline in ridership during the 70's. This verison of the Thru-Express was discontinued on May, 24, 1976. Considering it began in 1959 it lasted a lot longer than any of the other Broadway Thru-Express.

C/Rs operated 4X4 and opened only the first 4 cars at So/Fy. The lcl platforms S/O 34 St could only accommodate 8 cars so the Bway Lcls ran only 8 cars util those platforms were lengthened to 10 cars. On Sat & Sun the Bway Lcl operated 6 cars and the C/Rs operated 5 cars south and one car north so they could open up 5 cars at So/Fy. When trains returned to V/C the C/R position was now 5 north and 1 south so the drum switches had to be reset on every train so that the C/R could be 5 south and 1 north for the S/B trip back to So/Fy.

The “express” service operated on the Bway Line after Feb 1959 was NOT called the "Bway Thru Express.” The true Bway Thru Exp operated very briefly circa 1955 and involved the selected Bway exp trains from N/Lts operating rush hours via the middle tk between S/O 103 St and S/O 137 St bypassing the lcl stations in between in the peak direction of traffic. It was discontinued since thru exps had to be routed back to the Lcl tracks S/O 103 St in the AM and S/O 137 St in the PM and the resulting congestion caused delays rather than saving time. Since the so called “express” service N/O 96 St was express on its branch line and local on its trunk line, trains carried route signs reading “LOCAL - EXP” like the Pelham expresses did at the time. On the first day of the new schedules Friday Feb 6 1959, the “express“ service ran S/B in the AM rush and N/B in the PM rush. In addition to the all day 137 St short turns, in the rush hours there were short line put ins and layups at Dyckman St to cover the bypassed stations. The N/B PM exp service only lasted the first day since confused passengers on the exp trains were pulling emergency cords on seeing their stations being bypassed by the express trains and there was difficulty fumigating the Dyckman short turns. Over the weekend, quick supplement schedules were generated and effective the next Monday February 9, 1959 PM N/B Exp service was eliminated and the Dyckman St layups extended through to V/C. A few years later due to the presence of GW HS at 191 St and the large number of Bx bus passengers boarding at 181 St, the exp service pattern was changed and the expresses now bypassed 215 St and 207 St and stopped at 191 St and 181 St instead. Along with that there were no more Dyckman St put ins but the lcl trains now came out of V/C. That pattern continued until 10 car trains were able to be operated on the Bway Lcl and during rush hours all trains operated out of V/C during rush hours on a slightly longer headway and 137 St short turns only operated middays. For those not familiar with some of the traditional divisional vagaries, the reason the the IRT service changes went into effect on a Friday was because at the time, the IRT payroll week ran from Friday to Thursday so all IRT pocks went into effect on a Friday. Eventually all divisions’ payroll weeks were standardized to run from Sunday to Saturday.
